University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is seeking applicants for the position of Associate Chief Quality Officer (ACQO) for Ambulatory Services with an expected start date of no later than July 1, 2021.  The ACQO for Ambulatory Services will oversee all outpatient quality and safety initiatives for University of Iowa Health Care. The ACQO will assist the Chief Quality Officer (CQO) in leading the conception, development, and measurement of University of Iowa Health Care’s strategy for quality, safety, and adverse event reduction. The ACQO will provide leadership for performance improvement initiatives in clinical quality and patient safety to ensure that UI Healthcare achieves excellent outcomes. The ACQO reports directly to the Chief Quality Officer.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work collaboratively with the Executive Director of the University of Iowa Physicians and his/her staff, the Population Health Medical Director and other members of UIHC ambulatory leadership team on the following:
  • Identify and prioritize quality and safety initiatives for Ambulatory Services at UIHC
  • Collaborate on value-based care initiatives and monitoring of associated metrics
  • Collaborate to establish patient care models in the ambulatory setting that increase the safety of patients, clinicians and staff
  • Develop and foster partnerships with physician and nursing leadership in ambulatory care areas
  • Monitor ambulatory unit councils and unit rounding to support Medical Directors and Nurse Managers
• Work collaboratively with the CQO, other ACQOs, and Physician Value Officers (PVOs) to promote, evaluate and improve clinical quality and patient safety across the enterprise
  • Assist in the development and implementation of annual institutional quality and safety goals
  • Actively and consistently participate in Quality Executive Council, Quality and Safety Oversight Subcommittee and the Performance Improvement Workgroup
  • Provide consultation on high harm score safety events and advise regarding corrective actions.  Monitor safety event trends in the ambulatory areas.
  • Moderate root cause analyses and Safety Oversight Team meetings within the ambulatory domain
  • Mentor Medical Directors on quality and safety principles and concepts.  Provide feedback for Medical Director’s annual performance evaluation
  • Effectively measure and analyze quality and safety data and advise on strategies for improvement
  • Develop and implement programs to improve the human, organizational and system factors that contribute to adverse events
  • Improve risk identification, risk mitigation and error reduction, standardization, improved communication and simplification
  • Engage in scholarship related to clinical quality and/or patient safety and disseminate results through presentations and publications
  • Educate clinicians and learners on clinical quality and patient safety
• Completion of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School (online modules) and the UIHC Lean Training Course within 6 months of hire (if not already completed).

Qualifications:

Required

• MD, DO, or equivalent degree
• Current license to practice medicine in the State of Iowa
• Active clinical staff privileges at UIHC
• Clinical focus and significant amount of time is spent in a non-procedural ambulatory care setting
• At least 3 years post-GME clinical experience
• Ability to devote 50% effort to this role
• Demonstrated respect for an interdisciplinary care model and for the value of all members of the healthcare team

Desirable

• At least 5 years post-GME clinical experience
• Experience in clinical quality and/or patient safety projects
• Formal training in clinical quality, clinical epidemiology, and/or patient safety, or an advanced degree (e.g., MPH, MHA, MSHA, MBA)

Percent Effort

• This is a 50% effort position within the University of Iowa Hospital administrative structure.  It is expected that the Ambulatory ACQO will spend a significant portion of their remaining time delivering clinical care, preferably in the ambulatory setting.
