For the safety of everyone at UI Hospitals & Clinics, beginning Wednesday morning, March 18, everyone entering our hospital—including faculty, staff, and volunteers—will be asked this question: “In the past week, have you had any NEW cough, difficulty breathing, body aches or fever?”

Designated staff entrances during peak commute times, weekdays (see map below)

UI Health Care employees and volunteers must have their UI Health Care ID badge or another photo ID for employment verification in order to enter the building. The following entrances will include screening stations Monday–Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. These entrances are for employees and hospital volunteers only:

  • From Parking Ramp 4, the tunnel into Lower Level Pomerantz Family Pavilion
  • South and north doors of the connector between UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital and John Pappajohn Pavilion, Level 1
  • Side Emergency Department entrance, to the right of the E.D. main entrance (please do not use the E.D. main entrance)
  • Boyd Tower northeast door near Elevator AA

Note: There will be no access between the College of Medicine and the hospital. Use the exterior ground floor screening entrance at the northeast door of Boyd Tower.

Employees may also use designated patient and visitor entrances

Employees may also use the public entrances at these locations:

  • Main Hospital Entrance, including skyway from Ramps 2 and 3 (Roy Carver Pavilion): 24/7
  • UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital Entrance: 24/7
  • Pomerantz Family Pavilion, Level 2 from Parking Ramp 4 Skyway: 24/7
  • Pomerantz Family Pavilion Main Entrance: Monday–Friday, 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Open to certain patients:

  • Family Medicine circle drive near Parking Ramp 4: This entrance is only for Family Medicine Clinic patients or MyChart video- or phone-visit follow-up appointments.
  • Emergency Department: Patients and visitors will be able to enter the Emergency Department as usual. A separate screening process will be used in the Emergency Department. Patients coming in an emergency to one of the other entrances will be directed by screening staff to the Emergency Department.
  • Labor and Delivery: The south door of John Pappajohn Pavilion is closed, but in an emergency or in labor, there is a call button at that door, where security can grant access.

All other exterior doors not listed on this page will be locked. Bring your badge home with you each day so you can get through the lines faster, and please plan for extra time to get to work.

The screening questions at the entrances are as recommended by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Maintain social distance if you’re waiting and practice good hygiene (cough or sneeze into your elbow, not hand).

In the event of an emergency, Safety and Security can always be reached at 319-356-2658.

Thank you for your flexibility and preparedness to get to work on time despite these changes.
