2022 ABA Judicial Clerkship Program

The American Bar Association (ABA) Council for Diversity in the Educational Pipeline and the Judicial Division is currently looking for students to participate in one of the American Bar Association’s signature diversity and inclusion initiatives – The Judicial Clerkship Program (JCP). The next JCP will be held at the ABA Midyear Meeting, February 10-12, 2022, in Seattle, Washington.  

The goal of the program is to promote full and equal participation in the legal profession of minorities, women, persons with disabilities, and person of differing sexual orientation and gender identities. To address this goal, the ABA created this program with to encourage law students to pursue clerkship opportunities while introducing judges to students whom they might not ordinarily consider as potential clerks.  

The program provides diverse law students from underrepresented communities with real-world practical skills training on being a judicial clerk along with unprecedented group and one-on-one mentorship from and networking with state and federal judges from across the country.   

Please submit your resume and short letter explaining your interest in participating in the program to AJ Finch at (alfred-finch@uiowa.edu). Acceptance to the JCP is not dependent on grades. Space is limited so the deadline for applying is Friday, December 3, 2021.

Georgia IP Alliance IP Career Showcase

Judicial Clerkship Opinion Writing Conference

The Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America welcomes applications to its second annual Judicial Clerkship Opinion Writing Conference, to be held February 24-26, 2022. The conference is open to individuals who have accepted a 2022-2023 federal clerkship (district court or court of appeals) or a 2022-2023 state appellate court clerkship. The 2022 conference is currently planned to take place in person on our campus. Conference details may be found here: Conference Details.

Over the course of the conference, conferees will receive opinion writing instruction from some of our nation's most distinguished members of the judiciary. They will also be guided through writing an appellate court opinion and will receive individual review and commentary on their work by our faculty, all judges or former judicial clerks themselves. 

Conferees will be limited to twenty-five. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance until the limit of conferees is reached.

Fellowships/Scholarship Opportunities

ABA Judicial Intern Opportunity Program

The American Bar Association’s Litigation Section is a place where law students become engaged in the legal profession and where we advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. One example of our work is the Section’s Judicial Intern Opportunity Program (JIOP). The program is a summer internship program open to all first- or second-year diverse law students. 

Selected students intern for six weeks or more during the summer with a participating state or federal judge. The program offers a $2,000 award to each selected student. Students can also elect law school credit or coordinate their award with their work/study financial aid.

ABA Steiger Fellowship

The Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project provides law students the extraordinary opportunity to work in the consumer protection departments of state and territorial Offices of Attorneys General and other consumer protection agencies, including the National Association of Attorneys General and the Attorney General’s Office of the District of Columbia, throughout the United States. The eight-to ten-week paid Fellowships were initiated in 2004 by the ABA Antitrust Law Section, in cooperation with the National Association of Attorneys General, as a consumer protection outreach initiative to introduce law students to the rewards of legal careers in public service. A total of 460 Steiger Fellowships have been awarded through the summer of 2021.

Lowenstein Sandler 1L Summer

This program offers 1L law students the opportunity to work side by side with Lowenstein Sandler attorneys, a Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Member law firm, during our summer associate program. The program also includes the opportunity to attend the 2022 1L LCLD Scholars Summit. Candidates must be currently enrolled, full-time 1L students at accredited law schools. The 2022 LS Scholars Program offers positions in our Roseland, New Jersey and New York, New York offices
with a weekly salary of $3,950.00. In addition, after successful completion of the 1L Summer Associate Program, 2022 LS Scholars will receive a $10,000 scholarship for second-year tuition and related fees. If LS Scholars are offered and accept Summer Associate positions with Lowenstein Sandler for their 2L summer and they remain in good standing during their 2L academic year, they will receive a $15,000 scholarship for third-year tuition and related fees after successful completion of the
2L Summer Associate Program.

Big Ten Legal Internship

The Big Ten Conference is seeking candidates for a legal internship. The Legal Intern will work closely with internal stakeholders to provide excellent legal services to the Big Ten Conference. This is a great opportunity to get hands-on legal experience in the collegiate athletics space.


Responsibilities include:

Qualifications

• Must be pursuing a JD at a Big Ten member institution

UCSF ICD summer 2022 internship program

UCSF is one of the world's leading biomedical research institutions, producing a steady stream of scientific knowledge and clinical achievements. The creation of new knowledge and making such knowledge available in the world of health care (through education and technology transfer) are at the core of UCSF’s mission. The Industry Contracts Division (ICD) helps support that mission by building strong relationships with industry sponsors of UCSF clinical and basic sponsored research programs through our contract services. ICD has primary responsibility for negotiating and approving all industry research contracts between UCSF and biotechnology and
pharmaceutical companies, including clinical trial agreements, sponsored research agreements, material transfer agreements, and confidential disclosure agreements.

The Legal Intern (LI) will have the opportunity to negotiate a wide variety of agreements that include confidential disclosure and material transfer (or more advanced agreements depending on the LI’s experience) directly with industry counterparts. The LI will work through the entire contract lifecycle, under the supervision of ICD staff, which includes preparation, review, analysis, and negotiation of agreements. The LI will also research legal questions, manage sensitive communications with sponsor representatives, and provide time sensitive quality customer service to principal investigators and their staff. The LI’s work assignments will provide the
student with opportunities to develop basic contract drafting and negotiation skills, learn about issues pertinent to the university-industry collaborative research process, and become familiar with UCSF’s intellectual property policies.

This is a paid internship.


Qualifications:
Candidate must have successfully completed the first year of law school. The ideal student will also have a background or strong interest in the life sciences, and demonstrated interest/knowledge of sponsored research, contracts, and intellectual property law.
