Students are back in Iowa City and the first day of classes is nearly here (six days ... but who’s counting?).
This week is especially busy for many of us as we prepare for the semester and welcome first-year students to campus.

Thank you for being a part of our CLAS community. | | | Dr. Liz Mendez-Shannon will be joining CLAS as the first ever full-time Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. As an alum, she is excited to return to Iowa City where she received her PhD in Social Work. Learn more about her in this Q&A. | | Please join us in welcoming and congratulating CLAS faculty and staff on their hiring, promotion, or transfer within the college. Check out this list of CLAS employee updates from July. | | | As part of the committee, Associate Professor Allison Jaynes will help set NASA's priorities in solar and space physics for the next ten years and beyond. The invitation to serve indicates her high stature in the field. | | Associate Professor Aron Aji led a team of colleagues across the university to produce the successful proposal that will form a National Resource Center for Translation and Global Literacy at Iowa. | | | Kelby Telander welcomed the opportunity in late July to share his personal story with 15 children as part of UISPEAKS, a 3.5-day summer program designed for kids aged 7-17 who stutter or have hearing loss. The camp is designed to build communicative confidence.
| | Several CLAS leaders traveled to Cincinnati to show their support for Menefield and enjoy the new show, including Associate Dean for the Arts and Humanities Roland Racevskis. He wrote this reflection about the storyline and impact of the music.

You'll likely see them moving around downtown Iowa City in large flocks as they become familiar with their new home. On Iowa! has many elements, including a CLAS Welcome Party for freshmen and transfer students.
