The Hardin Pulse, Spring 2022

The Hardin Pulse | Spring 2022

Message from the Director

Janna Lawrence, MLIS, AHIP, FMLA
Director, Hardin Library for the Health Sciences

Because so many of our major resources are electronic, we always say that you don’t need to come to the physical Library unless you want to – but if you haven’t visited Hardin lately, we would love to see you. Our number of daily visitors is still less than pre-COVID but has rebounded substantially. In fact, just before Finals in December, it was wonderful to see Hardin full of students!

Moving into a primarily virtual world during the first months of the pandemic made many of Hardin’s staff members realize that we like dealing with our patrons in person. Teaching by Zoom seemed amazing at first, but we really enjoyed returning to the physical classroom. If you have been wondering if your liaison is willing to teach in person, please ask! In most cases, the answer will be yes.

Over the next few months, you’ll notice some changes taking place at Hardin. The computer classroom in the West Commons on the 2nd floor is slated for an upgrade, although supply chain issues have slowed the progress. In early summer, work will begin to transform Hardin’s 1st floor into office space for personnel from the Office of the Vice President for Research. Although the Library will no longer have space on the 1st floor, there will still be an entrance into the Library there, since that entrance is nearest to the parking lots and bus stops.

The only Library function that will be affected is Interlibrary Loan. That office will be moving from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor, into what was previously the offices of Region 6 of the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM). (Region 6 is still affiliated with Hardin, but staff are now permanently working virtually.) No interruption to any of our services is anticipated, although there is sure to be more noise than usual.

If you have questions about Hardin’s services or resources, we are happy to answer them. All of the various ways to reach us are listed on Hardin’s Contact page. The Contact page now includes an anonymous feedback link, where you can leave suggestions for improving Hardin. I am also always happy to hear from you directly. You can contact me at 319-224-9870 or at janna-lawrence@uiowa.edu.

Hardin Highlight

Name: Michelle Dralle

Your role at Hardin: I am a Library Assistant IV working in Collections, Access Services, and just recently, returned to help in Interlibrary Loan.

Years you've worked in a library and years you've worked at Hardin: My library career started in high school in the late '70s as a volunteer at my hometown library in Allison, Iowa, under the direction of librarian Mabel Bauman. I started working at UI Libraries in 1983 and have worked at Hardin on and off as a student and staff since 1983. I've also worked at the UI Law Library, VA Library, Math Library, and the Iowa City Public Library (24 years).

One thing you enjoy about working at Hardin: I've worn many hats during my library career. Anything from dealing with the bomb-sniffing dog in 2007 during an active bomb threat at Hardin, working at the storage facility (lovingly referred to as the "barn"), to working on the lighting/HVAC project at Hardin. The best experience during my library career has been working with the many students and other individuals that have crossed my path and continue to keep in touch with me decades later.

A fun fact about yourself: I have no peripheral vision, so if you don't like the answer I give and you roll your eyes at me as you stand next to me, I most likely won't see it. My door is always open at Hardin, so stop in and say hello.

Interlibrary Loan

Did you know that Hardin Library operates its own interlibrary loan (ILL) service? ILL is a service for UI affiliates that provides free access to material either not in the UI collections or not immediately accessible in electronic format. Additionally, Hardin ILL staff use a specialized tool designed to locate articles in the health sciences. The number of requests is not limited. All you need is your HawkID and password. And with the recently updated ILL software, the process is even easier.

It generally takes 3-5 business days to receive electronic copies of requested materials. Physical items take longer. If an item is needed urgently for patient care purposes, please indicate this in the notes field of the form.

Contact Hardin Library Interlibrary Loan staff for questions about orders already placed, renewals, or trouble with accessing files.

Hardin Student Scholarship Winners

Student employees provide critical staffing for programs and services benefitting the entire UI libraries community. Library student employee scholarships are a way to recognize, support, and motivate students in their scholarship, research, and creative work at the University. Two Hardin library student employees, Alexis Redshaw and Elizabeth Lovell, were winners of the Dale M. and Mary Gail Bentz Libraries Student Employee Scholarship.

Alexis Redshaw
Ethics & Public Policy major (pre-law), Art History & Philosophy minor
Underwood, IA

Elizabeth Lovell
Sociology major, with a track in Family and Health Services
Peoria, IA

A hearty congratulations to Alexis and Elizabeth!

Roots of Medicine Springs to Life

The Roots of Medicine is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Hardin Library, the College of Pharmacy, and community plant specialists. As part of the project, the College of Pharmacy installed a medicinal garden in 2020 at the entrance of their new building. In 2021, the garden quickly established itself, brightening the entrance with blooms throughout the summer. Interpretive signs mark each plant and include a QR code that guests use to access online records that describe the plant's historical medicinal uses and modern research. Make sure to stop by the garden throughout the spring and summer to experience this unique destination on the health sciences campus.

New Reflection Room

Hardin Library now has a reflection room available on the 4th Floor – Room 417.

The reflection room is open to all and is a designated reflection space to be used for any quiet solitary activity, other than napping or studying, that supports the needs of the individual.

This is a pilot project.  Please send comments about the space to jennifer-deberg@uiowa.edu .
