Patients with certain congenital heart disease, which disrupt blood flow from the heart to the lungs, may have previously had multiple open-heart surgeries over the course of their lifetime. Osamah Aldoss, MBBS, UI clinical associate professor of pediatrics-cardiology, says the Harmony valve, recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), offers these patients not only a less invasive treatment than open-heart surgery, but also one with less recovery time and fewer restrictions before returning to work or other activities.

The 2022-2023 academic year will see the pilot of University of Iowa’s Stead Family Department of Pediatrics elective opportunities for visiting medical students from diverse and Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) backgrounds. In conjunction with the Graduate Medical Education’s (GME) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Office’s pilot program of URiM rotations, the department’s medical education team created the elective in part to support the institution’s goal to increase diversity in the 11 departments piloting a URiM elective this year.

University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is using new technology to provide lifesaving dialysis treatment to the tiniest patients, improving outcomes for smaller, more fragile babies in renal failure. The Cardio-Renal Pediatric Dialysis Emergency Machine (CARPEDIEM) is a dialysis system designed to provide continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) for infants weighing between 5 and 20 pounds. CRRT is generally used for those in acute kidney injury or failure.

The event was spearheaded by Joyce Goins-Fernandez, PhD, vice chair of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics. Goins-Fernandez and a subcommittee from the department’s DEI committee organized the event, which was established as an effort to build a welcoming and more inclusive environment for the department’s providers, staff, and trainees.

Welcome our incoming residents and fellows
"We are excited to welcome our new group of learners to the UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics. Our medical student, resident, and fellow programs continue to develop additional opportunities for our current and future trainees, including our rotation for URiM medical students. We welcome two Child Neurology residents this year, bringing our new residency class to 17 for the first time. Our fellowships continue to recruit from all over the country, and from home, and we anticipate further growth in the coming cycle, with expansion of existing programs, and development of new ones. We invite you to visit our website to view our entire lists of incoming residents and fellows.
As we look ahead, we’re also excited to be building programming specifically for you, our alumni. We appreciate the relationships we have built with all of you, and look forward to offering opportunities to reconnect as we begin to have more occasions to meet up in person. Stay tuned!"
