Midterms, and Holidays, and Snow, oh my!

Veteran and Military Community at IOWA

A Note from the Military and Veteran Student Services Program Director

As we surpass the half way point in the semester, there is still plenty of work to do before the holidays and Finals Week.  With the change in weather and Thanksgiving Break coming up there will be no shortage of travelers on the road. Expect unpredictable conditions, be careful and look out for one another. This month we will honor Veterans and their service. There are a number of events during Veterans Week (listed below), starting on Veterans Day on November 11th through the Military Appreciation Football game on November 16th.  It will be a great opportunity to hang out, make some friends, and honor our nation’s veterans the Hawkeye way!

Pentacrest Veterans Day Flag Display

Veterans Day Flag Display

The University of Iowa Veterans Association will organize the seventh annual Veterans Day Flag Display on the West lawn of the Pentacrest with the assistance from volunteers from across campus and the community.

Each flag is individually dedicated by people like you via our flag registration site below. Each tag will show the veteran's name, rank, years of service, and tours if they were activated for any.

After viewing the display, stop into the Old Capitol Museum to see the latest exhibit, Art of Selling The Great War. The exhibit features a collection of WW1 posters that were used in propaganda campaigns in the early 1900's.

On November 8th we will be celebrating the United States Marine Corps’ 244th Birthday at Sports Column Bar and Grill in Iowa City. There will be pizza and cake and the event starts at 6pm. This is an informal event so no need to wear your dress uniform. All are welcome to attend.

In preparation for Veteran’s Day, starting at 7am on Sunday, November 10, the UIVA and other volunteers will put U.S. flags on the west lawn of the Pentacrest to represent Veterans that are in some way or form connected to the Iowa City community. If you’re interested in assisting, email tucker-trefz@uiowa.edu for details or show up Sunday morning!

This year the University of Iowa Veterans Association will again be teaming up with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Student Veterans Organization to ruck march the game ball from Kinnick Stadum to Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska, for the November 29th football game. Ruckers will be carrying 22 lbs or 22 items to honor the 22 Veterans who take their own lives every day. 22 will be made up of personal belongings which hold significant meaning to their personal military experience or which honors the service of friends or family.
