A Note from IVETS

We are entering into our last few weeks on campus together before the move to virtual instruction only after Thanksgiving break. Our staff remains available to you Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. virtually, with updated in-person hours for our 2706 UCC office.

From November 2 through November 20, 2706 UCC will be open for student visitors from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday and Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Starting the week of Thanksgiving break (November 23), our staff will be available for meetings in 2706 UCC by appointment only.

Veterans Day Events

Join us in celebrating Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11. Events will be ongoing throughout the week, including:

  • The Pentacrest flag display. UIVA is looking for volunteers to set up the display on Sunday, November 8th at 10 a.m. Please email Paul Richards at if you’re interested in volunteering. The display will remain up through Saturday, November 14th. There will also be a virtual gallery of past flag displays featured on
  • Veteran profiles. Each day, our website will feature a Hawkeye Veteran. You can find their profiles starting Monday, November 9th at and on our Facebook and Instagram.
  • #honorhawkeyevets campaign. Show support for the Hawkeye Veterans in your life by posting a picture of them with the hashtag #honorhawkeyevets during the week of November 9-13. We will feature your tags in our stories so everyone can honor our Hawkeye Veteran community.
  • The Hawkeye Distinguished Veterans Award ceremony. Read about this year’s recipients and register to join the award ceremony on November 12th from 5-5:30 p.m.

Election Resources

Election day is November 3, 2020. The University of Iowa’s non-partisan voter information organization, Hawk the Vote, created this comprehensive guide about how to vote in Iowa. Iowans can register to vote at their precinct location on election day.


Spring 2021 Registration

Registration for the Spring 2021 semester opens on Monday, November 30th. IVETS is offering a 2 s.h. course called “Strategies for Veteran Success.” This course is open to Veterans and current service members in their first year at Iowa. For more information about the course, email Matt Miller at

Deadlines for Tuition Assistance

If you’re a member of the National Guard, apply for your spring Iowa National Guard Service Scholarship by December 1, 2020. You must have your FAFSA completed in order to apply.

Veteran Peer Advisors (VPA)

Veteran Peer Advising is a peer support program that connects student veterans in their first semesters at Iowa with student veterans who know the ropes. Advisors can help you with the transition to college life at Iowa, from where to get the best coffee to how to get help with that Gen Ed class.

Pomerantz Career Center Veteran Peer Advisor

Get free advice on your cover letters, resumés, and more! In partnership with the Pomerantz Career Center, IVETS hosts a student Veteran who provides career-related peer advising. The advisor is available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m., and by appointment.

Math Platoon

Math Platoon is a collaboration between Dr. Colleen Mitchell of the Department of Mathematics and IVETS. Math Platoon provides FREE tutoring for University of Iowa students in the Veteran and Military-Connected community!  

No need to sign up; just hop onto the Zoom chat and get help with your math questions.
