Michael Welsh, University of Iowa professor of internal medicine, has won the 2025 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award for his fundamental research on cystic fibrosis, which paved the way to new therapies that have transformed the health and life expectancy of people with the disease. Lasker Awards, sometimes called “America’s Nobels,” are among the world’s most prestigious biomedical and clinical research awards.

Proposals are now being accepted for fiscal year 2027 P3 projects that support the University of Iowa’s 2022–27 Strategic Plan. Preliminary proposals must be submitted by Nov. 13. Jungin Angie Lee, a recent Iowa Writers’ Workshop graduate, and Ajay Patri, a current workshop student, are among the 12 recipients of “Go Finish Your Book!” awards from acclaimed author James Patterson. Patterson partnered with organizations, including the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, to give up to $50,000 to writers to complete their creative projects.

Coffee can be both beneficial and potentially harmful, depending on factors such as dosage, individual sensitivity, timing, and psychiatric conditions. A daily intake of 300 to 400 milligrams of caffeine — roughly equivalent to three to four cups — may offer several benefits. But there are several caveats to consider for healthy coffee consumption.

- TIAA retirement plan changes underway: The deadline to make changes to employee TIAA retirement plans before mutual fund balances and future contributions are impacted is 3 p.m. tomorrow, Sept. 12. - Supplemental Instruction sets record for student participation: The UI’s Supplemental Instruction program experienced its most successful year to date in 2024–25, with more than 22,000 visits and 3,054 unique participants in the program. - Recreation Center Lot switches to mobile payment: This week, public parking at the Recreation Center Lot adjacent to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center transitioned to a mobile payment zone, and the gates of the parking lot will remain open permanently. Read more.
