The Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM) takes place in two weeks on October 4-5 in Sioux City, Iowa, at the Tyson Events Center. IMOM is celebrating 15 years of transforming lives and helping Iowans. Volunteers and sponsors donate their time and energy to put on this critically important event and this year IMOM is in need of our help. If you are able to take a day to travel to Sioux City, please consider volunteering and giving back. As we all know oral health is crucial to a person's overall well-being and we, as dental providers, can truly change somebody's life. ~Clark Stanford | | | Three University of Iowa College of Dentistry Alumni – Lisa Holst, Kecia Leary, and Zach Kouri – were honored at the college’s annual Alumni Reception on Sept. 13 at The Graduate Hotel. The trio were named recipients of the 2024 Alumnus of the Year, Educator of the Year, and Dental Service Recognition Award, respectively. | | Sept. 21 is Global Dental and Oral Trauma Day. The day brings awareness around the world about dental and oral trauma, it’s prevention, and proper management. In this video, Dr. Fabricio Teixeira, Department Executive Officer in the Department of Endodontics, talks about his role in the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) and it’s mission. | | | Iowa represents at International College of Dentists National Convention in Nashville From Sept. 4-7, the International College of Dentists (ICD) held it’s national convention in Nashville, Tennessee. Associate Dean of Clinics Kecia Leary, Preventive and Community Dentistry department head Leonardo Marchini, and Clinical Associate Professors Aditi Jain, Manuel Gomez, and Marcela Hernandez were inducted ICD Fellows. | | Johnsen, Marshall present at Association for Dental Education in Europe At the annual session of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE), David Johnsen, dean emeritus, and Teresa Marshall, professor in the department of preventive and community dentistry, presented to a group of dentists representing approximately 25 countries. Johnsen presented on outcomes-bassed assessment on critical thinking, while Marshall spoke in the integration of diet and nutrition education in dental school curricula. | | | In December 2023, Karen Besler (’00 DDS) sold her Cedar Rapids practice and retired as a private-practice dentist to pursue a career as an active humanitarian. Her leap of faith landed her with the Mona Foundation, a nonprofit working to support and provide access to education for children worldwide. | | With a College of Dentistry CRISP grant, Anelise Viapiana Masiero is investigating how use of different instrumentation techniques, irrigation techniques, and heat affects endodontic sealers properties. | | | This professional program will focus on the extension of the tooth life cycle and will provide specialists and general dentists with an update on the latest innovations and techniques in endodontics. Participants will hear from Dr. Fabricio Teixeira, Professor and Head of Endodontics and George Bruder, Chief Research and Strategies Officer at the North American Dental Group. | | IASDA co-hosting Food Bank Fundraiser on Sunday The Iowa American Student Dental Association is co-hosting a fundraiser in support of the CommUnity Food Bank this Sunday from 4-6:30 p.m. across from Stella Restaurant on Melrose Avenue in Iowa City, weather permitting. Dr. Peter Damiano's band, HomeBrewed, will provide music. Food will be available from Maggie's Farm Pizza. | | Events
