| Dean's Message
I am continually amazed by the impact our college has. Our students, many of whom will practice dentistry in Iowa, our alumni who are transforming the lives of countless patients and the dental profession, our dedicated faculty and staff who serve our students and patients, and our groundbreaking research that is revolutionizing dentistry—all contribute to our success. I also deeply appreciate the everyday acts of kindness within our collegiate community. Your actions make a significant difference in the lives of many. Know that I, along with many others, see and appreciate your efforts. Please take a moment to express your gratitude and share how you have been impacted by fellow students, colleagues, faculty, staff, residents, and alumni. Recognizing others can have a profound impact, especially when it is easy to forget how important you are. Cheers! ~Clark Stanford | | Updates for January 17-23, 2025 | | | Dr. Azeez Butali, the Gilbert E. Lilly Professor of Diagnostic Sciences, was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) by the White House. Butali was recognized for his research on the genetics of cleft lip and palate, especially in African populations. Congratulations to Dr. Butali on an incredible achievement. | | Drs. Bowers, Marshall, and Banas were named recipients of the Innovations in Teaching with Technology Awards (ITTA) by the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology. The recognition celebrates faculty members who have demonstrated exceptional creativity and innovation in integrating technology into their courses. Their project is described as an artificial mouth simulation, which will mimic the progression of dental cavities in a controlled laboratory environment. The project bridges the gap between complex didactic teachings of cariology and its clinical applications. | | | Dean Stanford was recently featured by The Gazette to discuss TMJ disorder, what it is, how it’s treated, and what individuals can do to mitigate symptoms.
“As things become uncoordinated and the muscle that’s moving the ligament forward is no longer coordinated with the muscle that’s moving your jaw forward, it makes a bad ballroom dance, because they’re not dancing together anymore. That’s why they start stepping on each other's feet, so to say.” | | Join Iowa dentists for the biggest dental advocacy day in Iowa Don’t miss this great opportunity to join the Iowa Dental Association and help advocate for increased dental Medicaid rates, push for solutions to dental staffing issues, and encourage legislators to support further dental insurance reforms that benefit providers and patients.
