| Dean's Message
Beginning this week and over the next several weeks, the new academic year will start taking shape. You'll see many new faces in our hallways, classrooms, and clinics. Please welcome our new students, residents, faculty, and staff. Our community and our commitment to helping one another is a core part of our identity as a college. If you don't know someone, please introduce yourself and welcome them! I look forward to getting to know each of you. Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry's oral health research training program has been continuously funded for over 35 years, preparing the next generation of researchers in oral, dental, and craniofacial science. This renewal will help support dentistry PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers. The grant will support nine trainees per year.
| | Family Dentistry gets ready for the start of the new academic year! During their fourth year of dental school at Iowa, students continue to hone and refine their previous educational and clinical experiences during their first three years to comprehensively manage the oral health care needs of a diverse patient population, conducted within the educational framework to develop skills in critical thinking, professionalism, health promotion, interpersonal skills, cultural competency, interprofessional practice and practice management, in order for the graduate to be competent for independent practice. The Department of Family Dentistry is responsible for developing and mentoring fourth-year dental students to accomplish these goals, so that they are prepared to enter into general practice after graduation. To that end, Family Dentistry held their Annual Summer Retreat on July 21 as they prepared for our fourth-year dental student orientation. With all the smiles, you can tell our faculty and staff are excited to welcome our students back. You can see more photos from the retreat on Facebook or Instagram! And follow us, if you haven't already! | | | Iowa Dentistry at the Johnson County Fair The Johnson County Fair was held this week, and Iowa Dentistry had an informative display showing the amount of sugar in various kinds of sugary beverages, a toothbrush for a giant, and free toothbrushes and toothpaste for those who dropped by the booth. Thank you to our staff and students who made the booth a big hit! You can see more photos from the Johnson County Fair on Facebook or Instagram.
| | IMOM Testimonials Kyungsup Shin, associate professor of orthodontics, volunteered with his son, Jayden, at the 2022 IMOM along with several other parent-child pairs from Iowa Dentistry. Not only is IMOM a powerful experience for individuals, but it's also a great opportunity for families to serve others together.
"We were extremely grateful for this opportunity to serve our patients together at IMOM. It was wonderful teamwork with students, staff members, faculty, private practitioners, and volunteers from all over the State of Iowa. Jayden and I returned home with our minds filled with appreciation and gratitude."
Sign up as a volunteer today. Everyone has a part to play! Even your teenage children! | | | Congratulations to Christopher Hogden! On July 14, Christopher Hogden, assistant professor of endodontics, successfully defended his Master's thesis, "The effect of non-demineralized dentin matrix components and induced inflammation on dental pulp stem cells" under the direction of Carolina Cucco and Cris Vidal. | | Each Hawkeye is unique and has a different set of needs. Hawkeyes know that we all grow best by supporting and helping one another. | | | Chaudhary PP, Myles IA, Zeldin J, Dabdoub S, Deopujari V, Baveja R, Baker R, Bengtson S, Sutton A, Levy S, Hourigan SK. Shotgun metagenomic sequencing on skin microbiome indicates dysbiosis exists prior to the onset of atopic dermatitis. Allergy. 2023 Jul 8. doi: 10.1111/all.15806. PMID: 37422700.
Although the microbiome is a likely contributor to atopic dermatitis, research has not determined whether the dysbiosis is secondary to diseased skin or if it predates symptom onset. Previous work has evaluated how the skin microbiome changes with age and established the influence of factors like delivery mode and breastfeeding on global microbiome diversity, but these studies did not determine which comes first. Taking skin swab samples from 72 children followed over the course of three years, the team found that children who developed atopic dermatitis also tended to have an abundance of several bacteria and fungi that were correlated with atopic dermatitis. This research provides evidence in support of the claim that dysbiotic signatures in the microbiome precede the onset of atopic dermatitis. | | Hawkeye History: 50th Anniversary of the Dental Science Building In 1973, 50 years ago, Iowa Dentistry made the trek across the river to take up residence at our current location. The new building allowed the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics to grow into the college it has become today. | | Events
