Edwin Stone, professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences in the Carver College of Medicine and director of the UI Institute for Vision Research, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine, one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine. Stone is recognized for pioneering research that has transformed the understanding and treatment of genetic eye diseases.

Andrew Forbes, professor and associate chair in the UI Department of Biology, is leading National Science Foundation-funded research on parasitic wasps, discovering hundreds — maybe thousands — of new species and furthering his claim that they are among the most plentiful species on Earth. The research is important because it helps further the understanding of how new species of insects and animals evolve.

When Ethan Wattleworth was a child, he received a life-saving stem cell donation from Hannes Weissensteiner, who lived in Germany at the time and was a match.
