University of Iowa Department of Biostatistics Newsletter – Winter 2024-2025

From the Chair

Dear alumni and friends,

We hope that your new year is off to a good start! As we begin the 2025 spring semester, we wanted to update you on recent developments, transitions, and happenings within our department.

This past fall, we welcomed a stellar class of 17 new students, hailing from 14 colleges and universities, eight states, and four countries. We are grateful that they chose the University of Iowa to pursue their graduate degrees, and that they have joined our extended academic family.

We experienced a few significant transitions since you received our last newsletter in the spring of 2024. Our much beloved staff member Ann Weber, who has been with the department since 2006, retired this summer. We wish Ann happiness and good health in her retirement years. We were fortunate to recruit Emily Stagman as our new Administrative Services Coordinator. Emily is a lifelong Iowan and a 2020 alumna of the University of Iowa. She has been a joy to have on our staff.

This December, we bid farewell to our colleague Dr. Ryan Cho, who accepted an appointment in the Division of Biostatistics and the Department of Neuroscience at the University of California at San Diego. We are grateful for Ryan’s contributions to our academic mission, and although we will sincerely miss him, he will continue to be engaged with our department as an Adjunct Professor. We also welcomed a new colleague, Dr. David-Erick Lafontant, as a Clinical Assistant Professor. David-Erick has been on the staff of the Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center (CTSDMC) since 2013, and completed his doctoral degree from our department this past fall. He will continue working for the CTSDMC in a leadership capacity.

We hope you will enjoy perusing the stories and articles in this edition of our newsletter. Along with information about current events within the department, we intend to use this forum as a means of providing updates on our alumni; with this in mind, please send us news and announcements, both professional and personal at Biostatistics@uiowa.edu. We would love to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Joseph E. Cavanaugh, PhD

Highlights from the CTSDMC

This year the Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center (CTSDMC) celebrated our 35th anniversary. We have welcomed 5 new team members and have had 3 new projects funded, including: Path to Prevention (P2P) Platform Trial Data Management and Statistics Cores funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and the PCORI-funded APT Comparison Study, a comparative effectiveness trial for three commonly used headache medications. Other notable accomplishments include: the successful launch of an NIH-funded interventional epilepsy trial (the Epilepsy Journey 2.0 study); and the launch of a network wide dashboard for the Network for Excellence in Neuroscience Clinical Trials (NeuroNEXT). In addition, the Center has also seen 5 publications come to fruition since last summer; and, for the second year in a row, a PPMI publication was selected by editors of Neurology Today as one of the top papers in movement disorders that move the field of neurology forward in 2024. This paper introducing a new staging system based on a biologic staging process has opened new avenues for research in the field of PD, including the ongoing development of the first of its kind platform study in a pre-clinically diagnosed population within PPMI.

This past year we hosted our 3rd annual All-In Day, where we brought in the Center’s remote team members and local members to discuss current projects and studies as well as celebrate the success we accomplished throughout the year.

We look forward to continuing to expand on the successes of 2024 and taking advantage of all the opportunities and advancements that 2025 will bring us.
