| Dean's Message
November 11 was Veterans Day, a day set aside to honor those who have served in uniformed forces. The college has a long and storied history of graduating dentists who serve in the uniformed forces, which continues today. The University of Iowa recently recognized Dr. Howard Cowen and fourth-year dental student Zach Graham for their service by awarding them the 2024 Hawkeye Distinguished Veterans Award. We are also committed to ensuring that our veteran patients receive the dental care they need after they service. From organizations like Everyone for Veterans, providing free prosthodontic care to veterans, or establishing—with support from you—the Dr. Jo Rummelhart Veterans Appreciation Fund, we are trying to do our part to ensure access to care for veterans. Thank you to our veterans and thank you for making a difference in the lives of our veterans. ~Clark Stanford | | | In the latest rankings published by Shanghai Ranking, the College of Dentistry was ranked in the top five percent of all colleges of dentistry with a 16th overall ranking in the world. Please familiarize yourself with policy 6.14 in our Clinic Operations Manual located on the Intradent. Service animals are permitted in any area open to the public, however there are limitations for service animals in procedure areas. Members of the college may ask if a service animal is required because of a disability and, if so, what work, or task has the animal been trained to perform. You cannot inquire about the nature of the disability of medical history. Additionally, emotional support animals are not recognized as service animals and are not allowed in the DSB. | | | Robinson K, Parrish R, Adeyemo WL, Beaty TH, Butali A, Buxó CJ, Gowans LJJ, Hecht JT, Moreno Uribe L, Murray JC, Shaw GM, Weinberg SM, Brand H, Marazita ML, Cutler DJ, Epstein MP, Yang J, Leslie EJ. Genome-wide study of gene-by-sex interactions identifies risks for cleft palate. Hum Genet. 2024 Nov;143(11):1341-1352. doi: 10.1007/s00439-024-02704-y. Epub 2024 Oct 3. PMID: 39361040.
There are two types of orofacial clefts (OFC), cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) and cleft palate only (CP). Although prior studies had found sex-specific risks for CL/P that explain why CL/P is more common in males than in females, the fact that CP is more prevalent for females than for males has not been explained. To address this gap, the research team with several University of Iowa researchers performed a sex-stratified genome-wide association study based on proband sex followed by genome-wide gene-by-sex interaction testing. The team found that LTBP1 is a gene of interest for CP risk, particularly for females, but these findings would not have been detectable in a combined sex cohort. | | Events
