That’s a wrap on another academic year!  

Thank you to everyone who volunteered at commencement. We graduated more than 2,300 undergraduates and held two successful commencement ceremonies. Our events included remarks from two outstanding students, performances by two talented vocalists, and the conferring of two honorary degrees. Take a look at the photos! 

We also want to highlight the many accomplishments of our faculty and staff. Thank you for all the ways you’ve carried out our mission this semester. You've made a difference for our students, including our newest alumni!

Pacheco honored with prestigious Carnegie fellowship

Julianna Pacheco, professor in the Department of Political Science, was named a 2024 Andrew Carnegie Fellow by the Carnegie Corp. of New York. Pacheco is one of 28 fellows selected and will receive up to $200,000 to research political polarization in the U.S. and how to bring people together to bolster democracy.

Dvorak, Miles receive UI Mid-Career Faculty Scholar award

Abbey Dvorak, associate professor in the School of Music, and David Miles, associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, received the Mid-Career Faculty Scholar Awards for 2024. The award provides funding and development opportunities for outstanding tenured associate professors.

Gidal, Harvey, Murray, Rocha named Hubbard-Walder honorees

Eric Gidal, Department of English; Trevor Harvey, School of Music, Margaret Murray, Departments of Rhetoric and Mathematics; and Rene Rocha, Department of Political Science; were named recipients of the 2024 Hubbard-Walder Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award is given to faculty who have participated in various university teaching and contributed to curriculum development.

Prineas, Bowden named newest members of National Academy of Inventors

John Prineas, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Ned Bowden, professor in the Department of Chemistry, were elected to join the University of Iowa chapter. Both faculty members expressed their gratitude to CLAS, crediting the dedication to research as a major help with their work.
