Eleven University of Iowa students — all Iowa natives — have been selected from more than 10,000 applicants nationwide to receive Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards for 2026–27. The students will teach English, serve in community organizations, and conduct research and graduate studies. Read more about each recipient and their plans.

University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson has appointed Barry Schreier the next faculty ombudsperson after an internal search. Schreier, director of the higher education program for the UI’s Scanlan Center for School Mental Health, will begin the half-time role in the Office of the Ombudsperson assisting students, faculty, and staff on July 1.

More than 40 years after leaving the UI just a few credits short of a degree, Tim Dickson has fulfilled a promise to his mother by returning to the university — thanks to an online program that finally made finishing his degree possible from the Washington, D.C., area. Dickson graduated last week with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and religious studies. Read more about his journey to graduation.

First responders across the country are facing increased stress, trauma exposure, and burnout, and the UI College of Education is helping lead a national effort to improve their mental wellness. A new professional development program created by the college and the First Responder Center for Excellence gives fire service, EMS, and law enforcement professionals the tools they need to navigate the challenges of the job and protect their long-term well-being.

After watching his mother suffer from an undiagnosed migraine disorder for years, Andrew Russo, professor in the UI Carver College of Medicine’s Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, is studying how to better match migraine patients with the treatments most likely to help them. His work could reduce years of frustrating trial-and-error medication changes and improve daily life for millions of people living with debilitating headaches.

- Iowa City Transit interchange will move on June 1: The interchange for Iowa City Transit on June 1 will move from Washington Street in front of University Capitol Centre to Court Street in front of the Court Street Transportation Center due to construction on Washington Street. Cambus routes also will change due to the Washington Street closure.
- CSSI summer researchers in residence: Three faculty members have been selected for the Center for Social Science Innovation’s summer researcher in residence program. Read more about them and their projects.
- Parent/toddler volunteers needed: The Department of Physician Assistant Studies and Services is seeking volunteer participants for its students to practice noninvasive toddler wellness visits. Children age 18 months to 4 years old are eligible for the session from 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 10. Compensation and parking will be provided.
