Allison Levine, assistant professor in the College of Education, received a $2.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to use AI and virtual reality to help youths with disabilities prepare for careers in STEM fields. Garry Buettner, professor emeritus in the Department of Radiation Oncology, spent decades researching vitamin C’s cancer-fighting potential — and now that research is helping him. When Iowa public schools began teaching cursive writing again in 2024, teachers had few resources to turn to. That’s why Shawn Datchuk, professor of special education, and a team at the Iowa Reading Research Center created a free online tool that includes curriculum, videos, and more. Datchuk says handwriting boosts reading, writing, and learning skills — and pencils are still less expensive than laptops.

- Obermann Interdisciplinary Achievement Award nominations: The new Obermann Interdisciplinary Achievement Award recognizes individuals or teams whose work across academic disciplines produced findings or insights that would be unattainable within one field of study. Nominations must be submitted by Feb. 2.
- Hubbard-Walder Award for Excellence in Teaching nominations: This award recognizes up to five outstanding faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in a variety of university teaching and contributed to curriculum and/or program development. Nominations are due Feb. 4.
- Mental Health Champion award nominations: The Mental Health Champion award recognizes students, faculty, and staff who cultivate an environment that values and recognizes mental health and its importance in our overall health and happiness. Submit your nominations by Feb.13.
- Register for Brand 101 training: Brand overview training is available for all faculty and staff who want to gain a better understanding of the University of Iowa brand platform, visual identity, and the assets and resources that bring it all together. Training is virtual and will take place Feb. 26. Register via My Training in Employee Self-Service.
