As we come to the end of the year, I am pleased to share some highlights from the Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative at Iowa Law. I also want to thank everyone who supported our programs, students, and collaborations. We are fortunate to work in partnership with so many amazing individuals and organizations.
Warmly, Shannon Roesler Faculty Director, Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative
In 2025, the Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative (HELI) convened almost 1,300 attendees ranging from students, scholars, policymakers, practitioners, and community members to our events examining urgent questions in environmental law.
The new four-part speaker series examines corporate environmental governance by bringing together corporate leaders tackling environmental challenges in sectors such as agriculture, energy, healthcare, transportation, and consumer goods.
HELI events are now approved in Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Illinois, and Iowa. This expansion is set to serve a broader community of legal professionals engaged in environmental law across the Midwest. Read more here.
HELI is proud to support 15 Iowa Law students in securing impactful summer placements. This year, more than 86% of student placements are with organizations based in Iowa or the surrounding Midwest states. Meet the students launching their environmental law careers!
This year’s jump in ranking reflects the continued momentum and growth of the Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative. Iowa Law has made a notable leap in recent years—rising from not ranked to 88th two years ago, 70th last year, and continuing to climb into the top 50 this year.
The University of Iowa College of Law is pleased to announce the appointment of Jennifer Terry as the new Director of HELI. A distinguished alumna and a respected environmental policy advocate, Jen brings over a decade of experience to the role.
The Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative was created with the generosity of Iowa Law alumni Charlotte Beyer Hubbell (76JD) and Fred Hubbell (76JD) who recognized the urgency to address environmental issues in the state. The Hubbell gift gives Iowa Law the opportunity to make a difference.
