The University of Iowa is adopting a standard parking rate of $1.75 an hour beginning July 1, replacing the existing rate structure that varies by location, time of entry, and duration of stay. While some users will pay more, standardizing the rate simplifies operations and provides the necessary revenue to maintain safe and adequate parking structures across campus.

Lauren Steinke, UI assistant professor of health and human physiology, shares tips on how to incorporate fitness into your schedule and focusing on “progress, not perfection.”

Until now, there has been little understanding of what controls our appetite for salty foods. Joel Geerling, associate professor of neurology in the UI Carver College of Medicine, and his team have identified a set of neurons in the brain stem that controls our desire for salt and sodium. This study may help change the understanding of how taste and cravings influence diet, as well as help physicians find solutions to reduce excessive salt intake.

Since the NCAA legalized name, image, and likeness (NIL) policies for college students, Dan Matheson, director of the UI sport and recreation management program, has been thinking about how to incorporate NIL in the classroom. During the spring 2025 semester, UI students took a new class from Matheson where they came up with NIL plans for volunteer UI student-athletes.

A recently published study led by researchers at UI Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital shows tobacco sales to minors remain a significant problem, despite a 2019 federal law restricting tobacco product sales to those 21 and older. Data from the study shows that a major growth in specialty tobacco shops and weak enforcement penalties for violations are driving factors.

- UI Fleet Services has moved to a new location: UI Fleet Services’ daily rental and administrative services have moved to the former Housing Services Building, 175 Hawkeye Drive. Anyone picking up or returning rental vehicles should go to this location.
