News and Updates from IOWA Chemistry

Our interactive periodic table shown above at the grand entrance to our chemistry building welcomes thousands of students, visitors, and alumni each year.  It sits in front of what many alumni remember as the former entrance and steep stairs down into the large 300 CB lecture hall.  This email newsletter is our latest way to connect with you - our valued alumni, friends, and supporters.

A Message from Chemistry Department Executive Officer and Professor Renée Cole

Hello Iowa Chemistry Department Alumni, Friends, and Supporters!

We hope you enjoy reading here about some of our department’s exciting recent news that connects you to our dynamic chemistry community and maybe a story or two will stir up a few pleasant memories. Check out our Chemistry News page for more great stories of our faculty, student, and staff recent achievements and activities!  We are very grateful for your continued support of our department's growth and vitality.  Our transition from a formal annual Newsletter to periodic News and Updates emails will hopefully increase your connection and interactions with our IOWA Chemistry Department.

Welcome to our New Computational Chemistry Faculty Members

The Miro group computationally examines the structure-function relationships with polyoxometallates, including those with radiochemically useful properties.

Major Advances for our Growing Radiochemistry Program

Carver Charitable Trust Radiochemistry Facility Grant

The Carver Charitable Trust funded a grant written by several Iowa Chemistry faculty (left to right: Scott Daly, Renee Cole, Korey Carter, and Tori Forbes) to build a state-of-the-art radiochemistry facility in our Chemistry Building. This greatly expands the capabilities of our growing radiochemistry program.

Daly and Vlaisavljevich Transuranic Center Grant

Two or our radiochemistry faculty members, associate professors Scott Daly and Bess Vlaisavljevich, were recently awarded a major research grant from the US Department of Energy to establish a Transuranic Chemistry Center of Excellence at Iowa (TRUCoRE).

Instructional Faculty Grow and Succeed

Stephanie Parrot photo

Assistant Professor of Instruction Stephanie Eveland-Parrott Joins our Faculty

Dr. Eveland-Parrott joins us after spent five years as an inorganic instructor at Wittenberg University.  She obtained her Ph.D. in Chemistry at Iowa State University in 2019.  She is jumping right in to our largest enrollment introductory chemistry lecture and laboratory courses (and learning to become a Hawkeye!).

Adam Brummett photo

Adam Brummett Promoted to Associate Professor of Instruction

Associate Professor Brummett continues to expand and redesign our undergraduate instruction for introductory and inorganic chemistry.  He also in in his third year as the faculty director for the Sustainable Chemistry Along the Rhine Study Abroad course.

Leddy and Shaw Promoted to Full Professor!

Johna Leddy photo

Johna Leddy Promoted to Full Professor with Work on Electrochemical Energy Catalysis

Professor Leddy and her group advance fundamental ideas on electrocatalysts for energy technologies such as batteries and fuel cells. Catalysis is by physical means. Gradients about micromagnets drive electron transfers; constructive interference of ultrasound in thin fluid layers amplifies efficiency.

Scott Shaw in the arms of his graduate student group members

Scott Shaw Promoted to Full Professor with his Group's Support

Scott Shaw is well supported by his research group members who actively investigate materials and electrochemical structures to create new understanding of the molecular-level behavior at interfaces. They are making new discoveries supported by a $9 million Department of Defense collaborative research project.

International Speakers and Faculty Inventors

Claudio Margulis accepting his Spiers lectureship medallion

Professor Claudio Margulis Delivers an Invited RSC Spiers Memorial Lecture

Professor Margulis delivered an invited Spiers Memorial Lecture at the Royal Chemical Society in London.  It recognizes distinguished faculty whose research has led to outstanding contributions to the field of a Faraday Discussion.

Professor Ned Bowden Inducted into the National Academy of Inventors

Professor Ned Bowden recognized for his applied agricultural research with membership in the National Academy of Inventors.  Bowden's new technology for agricultural fertilizer delivery is being commercialized in a local startup company that he co-founded, Harvest Increase Agriculture.
