Mid-Day Mindulfness

Join other graduate students and postdocs for improvisation drop-in sessions where we will use improv theatre games to help you improve your confidence in public speaking, answering questions, and communicating your research to broad audiences. Sessions are led by Lisa Kelly, Associate Artistic Director of Theatre Cedar Rapids and the UI CIRTL Coordinator, and Kristy Hartsgrove Mooers, UI Theatre Faculty. The next session will be on 11/2 from 5 to 6 p.m.: IMU 335 Divine Nine Room. Complete the interest form for future sessions.

BUILD Training

Have you signed up for BUILD training this fall? Participants gain:

  • Skills for managing cultural transitions
  • Strategies for successful communication
  • Best practices for building and supporting diverse teams
  • Recognition of patterns of marginalization
  • Tools for resolving conflict and tension
  • Support in eliminating behaviors and practices that create barriers to inclusion

The BUILD initiative is an opportunity for UI faculty, staff, postdoc, and graduate students to gain strategic knowledge and skills to contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. By completing a series of workshops, participants will earn a certificate demonstrating their commitment as leaders for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and classroom.

Three Minute Thesis Competition

Join us for the 2022 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition on 11/4 at 1 pm in Art Building West 240! This fun event brings together graduate student researchers to “pitch” their research to the audience in only three minutes! Join us and cheer on your favorite pitches, enjoy refreshments, and get inspired by graduate students' research at Iowa.

NextGen Leaders Initiative

Disability:IN is accepting applications for its NextGen Leaders Initiatives this fall from November 1, 2022-January 6, 2023. Undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates with disabilities are invited to apply. People of color, women, veterans, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

Disability:IN NextGen Leaders is a six-month mentorship program that pairs NextGen Leaders with Disability:IN Corporate Partners. Students and recent graduates meet with their corporate mentor virtually twice a month, network with Fortune 1000 companies, attend professional development webinars, and receive job notifications throughout the year. At the end of the program, NextGen Leaders have the opportunity to attend the Disability:IN Annual Conference and network and interview with companies.

International Graduate Student Events

ISSE Coffee Hour – Fri, Nov. 4, 2:30 – 3:30 PM @ T.Spoons 

International Student Support & Engagement (ISSE) hosts weekly coffee hours for international students to build community. On Nov. 4, Grad DEI will partner with ISSE to host a coffee hour geared towards graduate/professional students. No RSVP required!

Interviewing Skills Workshop Tues, Nov. 8th, 3 PM – 4 PM @ International Commons (1117 UCC)

Learn how to prepare for the interview process. Learn effective techniques for answering interview questions for a variety of academic and nonacademic jobs, and practice and receive feedback on your interview skills. For more information: isss-peer@uiowa.edu 

Navigating Relationships w/ Employers & Advisors – Thu, Nov. 10, 11 AM – 1 PM @ International Commons (1117 UCC)

In collaboration with International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS), Grad DEI will host a panel discussion featuring the university ombudsperson, Chanelle Reese, along with alumni to discuss how to have difficult conversations with employers & advisors. IEW Mini Research Fair – Wed, Nov 16, 3 – 5 PM @ International Commons (1117 UCC)

For International Education Week, Grad DEI is partnering with ISSE to host a mini research fair. This poster fair will feature research by students on various international topics. Undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students will all be featured. Light refreshments provided. If you’re interested in presenting, please complete our registration form.
