College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

Last week, I had the honor of attending and presenting during the opening session at the Academy of Osseointegration's annual meeting in Seattle. I was delighted to share my thoughts and exchange ideas with peers from around the country. In the coming weeks, many faculty members, residents, and students from the college will be attending various conferences, giving presentations, and engaging in thought-provoking discussions that will undoubtedly benefit our college and broader community. I am extremely proud of the contributions our faculty, residents, and students make to advance dental science in order to better our mission of providing high-quality oral health care for our patients. Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Vargas MA, Margeas R. A Twist on Injection Molding: Injecting Conventional Resin Composites. J Esthet Restor Dent. 2025 Jan;37(1):7-13. doi: 10.1111/jerd.13410. Epub 2025 Jan 23. PMID: 39853916; PMCID: PMC11913208

This article introduces a novel twist on injection molding for anterior composite restorations: heating conventional high-viscosity resin composites to make them injectable, combining the strength of traditional materials with the precision of mold-based techniques. While flowable composites have dominated injection methods due to their ease of use, their lower filler content limits durability in high-stress areas. By warming conventional composites—the first attempt at such an approach—the authors achieved restorations with superior mechanical properties as demonstrated in a 70-year-old patient’s worn dentition case. The technique, leveraging digital workflows and strategic matrix design, reduced flash and chair time while delivering predictable aesthetics. For clinicians, this expands options for durable, cost-effective direct restorations in esthetic zones, particularly where flowable materials might fall short. However, the approach requires careful temperature control and larger access holes, adding slight complexity. The results suggest a promising middle ground between strength and simplicity, though long-term studies are needed to validate performance under occlusal loads. For patients, this could mean fewer compromises between affordability, longevity, and natural-looking results.

Kudos to you!
