The University of Iowa will not renew its lease for the Macbride Nature Recreation Area when it expires on July 1, 2029. The decision follows an in-depth review of the financial and operational sustainability of the 485-acre property, which is leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Terry Wahls, UI clinical professor of internal medicine, says playing in the dirt is good for you. Wahls’ research focuses on the importance of gut health, which she has found is improved by a plant-rich diet. After making changes to her diet after a multiple sclerosis diagnosis and seeing improvements in her health, Wahls and her team are committed to advancing chronic health research and helping patients make lifestyle changes that can reduce pain and fatigue.
