For the first time since 1987, the Iowa Hawkeyes advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff on this historic accomplishment. We are so proud of you and can’t wait until next year.

UI researcher earns national prize for muscular dystrophy research

Kevin Campbell — Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver Biomedical Research Chair and professor and chair of molecular physiology and biophysics — has received the 2026 August M. Watanabe Prize in Translational Research. His work has helped scientists better understand muscular dystrophy and supported new approaches to treatment.

UI research team discovers, names crocodile species ‘Lucy’s hunter’

UI researchers have discovered a new prehistoric crocodile species that lived alongside humans more than 3 million years ago. This large predator likely hunted near water sources, revealing the dangers early humans faced. The finding helps us better understand how humans evolved while surviving real threats in the natural world.

Ten faculty and staff members have been honored with 2026 Discovery and Innovation Awards, a longstanding program from the Office of the Vice President for Research that celebrates excellence in research, scholarship, creative activity, public engagement, and research support across the university. Third-year undergraduate student Nina Osborne named 2026 Goldwater Scholar

Nina Osborne, a third-year undergraduate student from Bloomington, Illinois, was named a 2026 Goldwater Scholar, one of the nation’s top honors for undergraduates pursuing research careers in the sciences, engineering, and math. Osborne studies geographic and sustainability science and environmental policy. She is researching how bur oak trees respond to heat and high carbon dioxide levels as ecosystems change.

Making small changes to text — such as using clear fonts, good contrast, and readable sizes — helps more people read and understand what you share. These steps matter because not everyone sees or processes text in the same way, so better design makes information accessible to everyone.

Cambus begins pilot to test new safety equipment

Cambus is testing new equipment designed to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers. The new equipment, installed in two buses, includes a collision warning system, digital mirrors, and external speakers to alert pedestrians and cyclists. Data from the pilot will help determine if the equipment will be installed on more buses.

  • Thank a graduate student: From April 6–10, the Graduate College will host a series of events to recognize the contributions graduate and professional students make to our missions of teaching, research, and service. The program includes a digital campaign where anyone on campus can send a thank you note to a graduate student.
  • Brody Award recipients: Ed Gillan and Teresa Marshall are the recipients of this year’s Michael J. Brody Award for Faculty Excellence in Service. The award recognizes faculty who have made exceptional contributions to the university and the community.
  • Construction alert: Capitol Street will be closed between the Burge Hall loading dock and Bloomington Street for work on the North Campus Parking and Chilled Water Facility. The area will be fenced off to prevent pedestrians from walking through the work zone. Parking in the North Campus Parking Ramp will not be affected.
  • Pentacrest turf work: This spring, Facilities Management will complete seasonal turf and irrigation repairs as well as irrigation installation in several areas of the Pentacrest. Work is expected to be complete before commencement. This project is part of maintaining a healthy and attractive campus landscape for the university community and our visitors.
  • Know an intern looking for housing this summer? The UI is offering summer intern housing this year in the residence halls. If you are working with an intern this summer — or know of someone with an internship in Iowa City — let them know about this opportunity if they are still searching for a place to live.
  • Register for Grandparents University: Registration for the UI Center for Advancement’s Grandparents University opens Monday, April 6. Spend a day of discovery with your grandchildren on July 16 while learning more about Iowa.
