Each fall, the College of Engineering honors the people who bring our mission to life through the Excellence Awards and Longevity Awards. From those on the front lines of education and student support, to researchers pushing the boundaries of innovation, to those running our service centers and sharing our work with the community—our success depends on their dedication, talent, and passion.

Among the winners, Beth Rundlett (above, holding a plaque surrounded by colleagues from the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering) received a Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Dave Funk (right, pictured with Dean Ann McKenna) was honored for 40 years of service. Did You Know?

Award-winning actor and entrepreneur Ashton Kutcher attended the College of Engineering in the late 1990s. A Homestead, Iowa native, Kutcher began studying engineering with hopes of finding a cure for his twin brother’s heart condition. Life, however, took an unexpected turn. A talent scout discovered him at the popular Iowa City bar, The Airliner, setting the stage for a successful acting career.

Although his career shifted to entertainment, Kutcher used his celebrity to pursue his early interests. As an entrepreneur, he has invested in tech and biotech startups. He has also spoken about the importance of engineering, noting that “in today’s world, we all need to be engineers.”

And, yes, he still wears his old Iowa Engineering baseball cap.
