October is National Dental Hygienist Month, a time to celebrate the incredible contributions of our dental hygienists. Alongside our dental assistants, office staff, maintenance teams, business office, and other support staff, your work serves as the backbone of the college. Your support, conscientiousness, and dedication ensure we are meeting the needs of every single patient who walks through our doors, and as a result we enhance oral health across the state of Iowa. Your work is crucial to achieving the college's mission of advancing oral health for the people of Iowa and beyond. Thank you for your efforts, time, gifts, talents, because you make us who we are. UI College of Dentistry, collaborators release Iowa Teledentistry implementation toolkit

A team at the UI College of Dentistry, led by Drs. Jennifer Hartshorn and Julie Reynolds, have released a toolkit to help Iowa dental providers understand ways they can utilize teledentistry in their practice to improve care efficiency and access. The toolkit can be found here and was part of a grant funded by the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation and in collaboration with the Community Health Centers of Southeastern Iowa.

Iben presents at national webinar on how dentists can identify child abuse, neglect

Polly Iben, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, was invited to speak at a national webinar sponsored by the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. She spoke on dentistry’s role in identifying and reporting orofacial child abuse, neglect, and endangerment. The webinar was attended by dental providers in 16 states around the country.

Iowa endodontist explores a method to educate students in the practice of treatment planning

With a University of Iowa CRISP grant, Dr. Abhishek Parolia is using a web-based training program based on the Dental Practicality Index (DPI) to educate students in the practice of treatment planning.

IASDA, Carver College of Medicine to host joint BID Charity Auction in November

The Iowa American Student Dental Association (IASDA) and the Carver College of Medicine Student Government Association is hosting the first joint BID Charity Auction benefitting the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI). UI College of Dentistry faculty, staff, and alumni are invited to join this formal event set to take place Nov. 16 from 7-10 p.m. at the Iowa Memorial Union’s International Ballroom.

Rogers joins Department of Periodontics

Dr. Jeffrey Rogers joined the UI College of Dentistry in the Department of Periodontics. He comes to Iowa after 20 years in private practice limited to periodontics and implant dentistry, with award-winning officers in Alaska and Washington. He earned his DDS from Virginia Commonwealth University, a certificate in Periodontics, and a Ph.D. in Oral Biology both from SUNY at Buffalo. Welcome Dr. Rogers!

Butali named President of University of Lagos Dental Alumni Association

Azeez Butali, the Gilbert E. Lilly Professor of Diagnostic Sciences, was elected President of the University of Lagos' Dental Alumni Association (CMUL-DAA) from 2024 to 2026. As president, Butali will lead an alumni body of about 1,000 dental graduates from the University of Lagos since 1971.

Damiano, Kanellis music groups raise over $3,000 for food bank

On Sept. 22, Drs. Peter Damiano and Michael Kanellis participated in a food bank fundraiser co-sponsored by the Iowa American Students Dental Association. Damiano’s band HomeBrewed and Kanellis’ band Acoustic Mayhem helped raise $3,200 for the CommUnity Food Bank.

Register for the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition

Master’s or PhD students who wish to compete in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition should register by Oct. 7. 3MT is a research communication competition that challenges graduate students to clearly and concisely articulate complex research to non-specialist audiences. The 2025 3MT preliminary competition will take place Oct. 10 – 11, with the final competition on Thursday, Nov. 7.

IMOM starts today!

The Iowa Mission of Mercy IMOM provides free dental care to underserved populations. Since 2008, it is has served over 17,000 patients from all over the state. Iowa Dentistry has played an influential role in supporting IMOM, especially on Saturday. The 2024 IMOM is being held in Sioux City on October 4-5.
