Dean's Message

As we close in on the start of the fall 2024 semester, I would like to share some food for thought for our students, faculty, staff, and alumni about personal growth. As time passes, we grow and change. It is as routine as the sun rising and setting, but where and how does personal growth manifest and how can we be conscious of this growth to steer ourselves in the direction we want to go? My growth comes from experiences that I integrate well. That begs the question, what does it mean to integrate my experiences well? If I allow myself space to be present with myself and my experiences, and reflect upon them, I allow myself the opportunity to integrate those experiences, which, in this noisy world, is becoming more difficult to come by. After a busy day or week, create time to properly integrate these experiences into your life to find your own personal growth. ~Clark Stanford

Collaborative and innovative research

Miszuk J, Hu J, Wang Z, Onyilagha O, Younes H, Hill C, Tivanski AV, Zhu Z, Sun H. Reactive oxygen-scavenging polydopamine nanoparticle coated 3D nanofibrous scaffolds for improved osteogenesis: Toward an aging in vivo bone regeneration model. J Biomed Mater Res B Appl Biomater. 2024 Aug;112(8):e35456. doi: 10.1002/jbm.b.35456. PMID: 39031923

PCL-TISA scaffolds, while effective for bone regeneration, require modifications to address the challenges of aging. This study aimed to enhance TISA scaffolds with polydopamine nanoparticles (PD NPs) to improve drug delivery and reduce harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS). Reducing PD NPs with ascorbic acid (rPD) further boosted ROS scavenging. Although rPD-coated TISA scaffolds effectively rescued ROS-impaired osteoblast function and enhanced bone formation in vitro, the in vivo studies did not show similar improvements in ectopic bone formation for older bones. This discrepancy highlights the complexity of the aging environment and the need for more sophisticated scaffold designs to address the multifaceted challenges of bone repair in older individuals.
