Dean's Message

I have enjoyed seeing the DSB return to form with faculty, staff, students, and patients navigating the hallways. Before you know it, we will be welcoming back our alumni with continuing education events and, of course, our Alumni Reunion weekend in September, which is a special weekend I look forward to each year. I encourage all of you to stay connected with old friends and colleagues while we celebrate the accomplishments of our alumni honorees. We’d love to see you at our Alumni Reunion Weekend Sept. 13-14, or one of our CE courses.~Clark Stanford

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Maharishi, A., Horkley, K., Unruh, D.K. et al. The Composition of Graded Dental Zirconias. JOM (2024). https://doi.org/10.1007/s11837-024-06791-0

Zirconia dental ceramic composition has changed from a uniform block of 3 mol. % yttria to blocks with a mixed composition where some parts are intended to accent the strength of the material and other parts the color of the material. Despite these changes, these mixed composition materials are an understudied area. As such, this study investigated the microstructure, elemental composition, and phase content of strength- and color-graded zirconia dental ceramics. The results revealed variations in grain size, elemental composition, and phase content between the top and bottom zones of some materials. These findings were consistent with previous studies on the relationship between composition and physical properties. However, modeling phase content from XRD data for complex yttria-doped zirconia crystal systems was challenging, highlighting the need for more detailed compositional data to understand the connection between composition, phase content, and physical behavior.
