College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

I hope you all have enjoyed the various holiday events throughout the college. Whether you've attended our Winter Gathering, participated in the college's holiday ornament contest, or joined an event within your department, this time of year is important to reflect, celebrate, and uplift each other. We've all worked hard this year and deserve some much-needed rest and relaxation, so I hope you are able to spend this winter break with the people who mean the most to you. This is the final Hawkeye Smile of 2024, so please enjoy your time off and if you're making the trip to Nashville to watch the Hawkeyes in the Music City Bowl, please consider joining us at our Health Sciences Bowl Reception, otherwise, I'll see you all in 2025! Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Moreira Cançado R, Sakuno A, Floriani F, Zandinejad A, Saraceni CHC, Giovani EM, Mesquita AMM. Impact of aging on the fracture strength of 3D-printed fixed implant prostheses: A comparative analysis of monolithic and bi-layer with or without fiber-reinforced composite frameworks. J Prosthodont. 2024 Nov 28. doi: 10.1111/jopr.13988. PMID: 39610152

This study evaluated the fracture strength of three-unit, implant-supported fixed prostheses made from 3D-printed resin, comparing monolithic designs with fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) frameworks. Results showed that FRC frameworks significantly enhanced fracture strength, while artificial aging had minimal impact. Failures predominantly occurred in the resin superstructure at connector sites, particularly the premolar. The findings underscore the importance of FRC frameworks for improving durability in 3D-printed dental prostheses.
