| Dean's Message
As teachers of the next generation of dentists, teaching, in large part, is the legacy and imprint we leave behind on the dental profession. All our experiences, knowledge, and accomplishments are part of an Iowa Dentistry legacy. We pass these lessons, even our complications, to the next generation. We are not defined by a single success just as we are not defined by a single struggle. Each experience, positive or negative, is a lesson and when we instruct our students with the knowledge of past experiences, we are allowing them to be more than we are, just as we inherited knowledge from our teachers and so on. It is on us to continue a legacy of integrity, compassion, and high-quality dental care so that the next generation of dental professionals has a brighter future. ~Clark Stanford | | Updates for June 14, 2024–June 27, 2024 | | | The University of Iowa College of Dentistry celebrated dental students, graduate students, and residents at its 2024 commencement ceremony in Hancher Auditorium on May 31. Dental school department strategic planning: A department driven approach. J Dent Educ. 2024 Jun 9. Dutch. doi: 10.1002/jdd.13623. PMID: 38853299.
Businesses and academic institutions periodically use strategic planning to shape and determine the mission, vision, objectives, and priorities of an institution. This structure is intended to inform long-term planning, decision making, and resource allocation. When dental schools participate in this process, the structure is informed by the larger university's strategic planning. Likewise, when dental departments identify a strategic plan, it is informed by the dental college's larger plan. Rather than using a top-down approach to strategic planning driven by the leadership of a department or a committee appointed by department leadership, this article advocates for a comprehensive review and analysis informed by engaging with faculty and staff as a group and as individuals over a limited period of time. The purpose of which is to receive input for the strategic plan from all departmental constituents, which can only be achieved in an environment where all faculty and staff feel empowered to express their views. The result, the authors argue, is a strategic plan that has buy-in from the whole department, which in turn, increases the likelihood of it being successfully implemented. | | Events
