College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

The college's alumni magazine, the Dental Link, will begin hitting mailboxes this weekend. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing stories from the magazine in the Hawkeye Smile and on social media. It is always a treat to see a recap of all that has happened in the life of our college within the last six months, and to share great stories about our alumni and faculty. ~Clark Stanford

Collaborative and innovative research

Barwacz CA, Swenson M, Couso-Queiruga E, Comnick C, Xie XJ, Avila-Ortiz G. Effect of CAD/CAM abutment morphology on the outcomes of implant therapy: A randomized controlled trial. Clin Oral Implants Res. 2024 Dec 6. doi: 10.1111/clr.14389. PMID: 39641983

This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of concave versus linear divergent CAD/CAM zirconia abutments on peri-implant health and mucosal dynamics after 1 year. The research team's findings revealed no significant differences between the two designs in terms of peri-implant mucosal changes or health indicators, as both showed high rates of implant survival and restoration success. The study concludes by arguing that peri-implant mucosal dynamics are multifactorial and complex and that the best clinical practice requires a holistic approach to implant therapy, integrating surgical and prosthetic principles for optimal long-term outcomes.
