For FY 2025, the University of Iowa distributed $15 million in P3 funding, including $2.2 million to two projects selected from a campuswide call for proposals. An additional $5 million was provided for upgrades to classroom and education space, as well as $7.8 million to support supporting strategic initiatives throughout the year. Last week, the National Science Foundation agreed to stop implementation of a new 15% indirect cost rate through Friday, June 13, when a federal judge is anticipated to issue a ruling on whether the new rate can go into effect. In addition, a preliminary injunction was filed in federal court to pause implementation of a 15% indirect cost rate at the U.S. Department of Energy.

Bijaya Adhikari and Guanpeng Li, both UI assistant professors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ Department of Computer Science, have earned CAREER awards from the National Science Foundation. CAREER awards are the foundation’s most prestigious honor in support of early-career faculty and include a five-year research grant for each recipient.

When UI archaeologists excavated mastodon bones in Wayne County last year — including the first well-preserved mastodon skull to be scientifically excavated — the unprecedented find provided a unique opportunity. Several UI undergraduate students have helped clean and preserve the skull, as well as uploaded 3D scans of the bones for researchers and the public to use.
