The University of Iowa has recruited a national expert to lead the top-ranked Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders as part of the university's new Transformational Faculty Hiring Program, aimed at attracting world-class faculty to strategic programs and areas of excellence. Eric Hunter will begin on Aug. 16.

Ed Wasserman, the Stuit Professor of Experimental Psychology, found similarities in how a pigeon’s brain learns compared to artificial intelligence. At a basic level, a pigeon uses the same repetitive trial-and-error approach that artificial intelligence uses to “brute force” learn a scenario or pattern.

Researchers at Iowa are creating new materials that may improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Gas-entrapping materials, or GeMs, carry large amounts of therapeutic gas into tissues, making a tumor more responsive to treatment. Foam GeMs are created in a similar way to how a barista makes foam on top of your latte.

To better serve a diverse patient population, UI Health Care recently became one of the first academic medical institutions to offer inclusive hair and beard care products. The products, selected by a small interdisciplinary group, are now offered in the emergency department and each inpatient unit within UI Hospitals & Clinics.
