Dean's Message

Earlier this week, the University of Iowa held its annual online giving day "One Day for Iowa." I would like to extend my sincerest thank you to the individuals who participated and contributed to the college on March 26, which will help us further our mission. Whether you contribute your time, money or skills, I truly appreciate all supporters of our wonderful college. Each one of you helps ensure the UI College of Dentistry remains one of the best dental colleges in the world. ~Clark Stanford

Stanford named AAAS Fellow

Dean Clark Stanford was named a 2024 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This prestigious honor recognizes his impactful work in dentistry and oral health — especially his research advancing care for patients with ectodermal dysplasias. Congratulations Dean Stanford!

Orthodontics celebrates student excellence at AADOCR

During the annual meeting of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research in New York City, the Department of Orthodontics shined with several student and resident presentations, including two Hatton Award winners.

Leary, Cho complete ADEA Leadership Institute

University of Iowa College of Dentistry faculty members Kecia Leary and Aaron (Seok Hwan) Cho completed the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Leadership Institute program as the class of 2025 in Washington DC during the organization's annual meeting March 8-11. 

College of Dentistry, IDA host 2025 National Signing Day

On March 24, the College of Dentistry hosted National Signing Day for D4 students in partnership with the Iowa Dental Association. IDA Vice President Shawn Hedlund ('91 DDS) and ADA 10th District Trustee Sara Stuefen ('10 DDS) were in the Dental Science Building to answer questions about organized dentistry and practicing in Iowa. Mueldener awarded grant to participate in AAOF Legacy Collection Project

Dr. Emma Mueldener, assistant professor in the Department of Orthodontics, has been awarded a $20,000 grant to participate in the American Association of Orthodontics Foundation (AAOF) Legacy Collection Project. This project aims to preserve and digitize historically significant orthodontic research materials, making them easily accessible to educations, researchers, and clinicians around the world.

Marshall named most-cited author

Teresa Marshall, professor of preventive and community dentistry, is among the top 10 most cited papers published by the Journal Of Dental Education in 2023. Her paper titled "Food insecurity is associated with lower diet quality among dental students,” identified relationships between food security status and diet quality in dental students.

Lyle, Schau named 2025 FIND recipients

Congratulations to Drs. David Lyle (’19 DDS) and Lauren Schau (’16 DDS) as the 2025 recipients of the loan repayment award from Fulfilling Iowa's Needs for Dentists (FIND). Lyle runs East Des Moines Dental and Schau runs Wildflower Kids Dentistry in Dubuque. The FIND program is a state and local collaboration that connects dentists and underserved communities with the resources needed to increase access to care.

Info corner: Patient referrals

Remember to use the internal referral process to appropriately refer patients within the College of Dentistry. This helps front line staff reach out to patients that may not get an appointment the day that they have been referred. The referral form process begins in the EHR: Forms tab > create new form > select Referral Internal and then complete the form. Within in the form ensure you select the level of provider and if this is limited care or transfer of care.

Join the IDA at Pinseekers

The University District Dental Society invites all dental students to their spring social on Thursday, April 3 from 5:30-8:30 PM at Pinseekers in Tiffin.  Connect with area dentists and enjoy a complimentary evening that includes dinner, golf and refreshments.  Networking, dinner and education program from 5:30-7:00 PM.  Golf and beverages from 7:00-8:30 PM.  Students may join us for the entire evening or come just for the golf!   Registration required.
