Amanda Elkins, attorney and director of UI’s Student Legal Services, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy. Elkins has built a reputation for compassion, care, and commitment to ensuring that students receive free, high-quality legal support.

UI Health Care nurse wins Olympic gold medal

Paige Beaudry, a nurse at UI Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital, won her second Olympic gold medal as part of the U.S. Women’s Deaf National Soccer Team at the Deaflympics in Tokyo. The Deaflympics is an international multi-sport event for deaf athletes, recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

  • New policy supports students who are pregnant or parents: The UI’s Policy on Student Pregnancy and Parenting prohibits discrimination and outlines reasonable modifications, such as rescheduled exams and extended deadlines, to help students who are pregnant or are parents to continue their education. Review the policy and guidance to understand your role in providing support.

  • New Campus Roots initiative celebrates sustainability: The UI’s Charter Committee on Sustainability is accepting nominations for its Campus Roots initiative, which recognizes and celebrates sustainable practices across campus. Teams of two or more people can submit their projects for consideration and those selected will have a tree planted in their honor. Submissions are due April 1.
  • Simple steps to keep your devices, data safe: Mobility is part of university life, but every time you log in from a hotel, coffee shop, or home network, you extend the university’s digital footprint beyond campus. That flexibility is powerful, but it is also a target for phishing and the compromise of personal devices. Learn simple actions you can take to protect your digital security.
  • Cambus spring break schedule: Cambus will operate on an alternate schedule March 14–21. Service will be reduced on some routes, and service after 8:45 p.m. will be provided by the On-Demand Shuttle. There will be no service on March 14, 15, or 21.
  • UI to conduct Hawk Alert test on March 25: As severe weather season begins, now is a good time to review how you'll receive emergency alerts and how to respond. Campus Safety will test the Hawk Alert system at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, in coordination with the National Weather Service.
  • No Iowa Now email March 19: Due to spring break, there will be no Iowa Now email on Thursday, March 19. Check your inbox on March 26 for the next edition.
