Community event focused on support, healing to be Sunday
University of Iowa’s student government leadership will host a community event from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Iowa Memorial Union. Community partners will be in attendance to share resources, including victim support services, counseling support, therapy dogs, campus safety information, and refreshments. Faculty and staff are invited to the North and South rooms of the IMU, and students should gather in the Hawkeye Room.

The University of Iowa Police Department will assign four additional officers to patrol the downtown area on Fridays and Saturdays in a joint effort with the Iowa City Police Department. James Byrne’s description of "sipping your medication off the top of your latte" earned him the 2026 BioInnovation Institute and Science Prize for Innovation. Byrne is an assistant professor of radiation oncology with UI Health Care, and his prize-winning essay, published April 2 in Science, highlights his work using foam-based approaches to deliver and improve cancer treatment.

Justin Wolfers, one of the country’s most prominent public economists, noticed her work and delivered a guest lecture at Iowa.

New UI research found that pigeons don’t consistently choose the option that previously earned them rewards. Instead, they mix in new choices, even when it may not pay off right away. Researchers say this behavior helps explain how animals — and people — adapt, make decisions, and stay flexible in uncertain or changing environments.

It started with a simple idea: Three economists and UI professors — Robert Forsythe, George Neumann, and Forrest Nelson — walked into a bar in Iowa City in 1988 and began questioning why polls often miss the mark. Their work led to the creation of the Iowa Electronic Markets, an early, real-money experiment designed to forecast election outcomes and demonstrate how markets can predict real-world events.
