Strategic plan update: Year 3 progress report

President Barbara Wilson and Provost Kevin Kregel highlight the University of Iowa’s record-setting progress in the third year of the 2022–2027 Strategic Plan. The university achieved all-time highs in first-year applications, student retention, and graduation rates, alongside remarkable faculty achievements that continue to elevate Iowa’s national standing for academic excellence.

Federal government reopens with funding through Jan. 30

Congress passed an agreement late Wednesday to reopen the federal government with a short-term funding package that extends through Jan. 30. This action restores operations across all federal agencies. See the Federal Updates 2025 webpage for more details.

2 Tippie faculty write 1 of first textbooks on AI ethics in business

Patrick Johanns and James Chaffee, associate professors in the Tippie College of Business, have written one of the first textbooks to address ethics and responsible use of AI in business. The book, AI in Business: Creating Value Responsibly, is designed for non-technical students who expect to use AI in their future careers. Available in January, the online-only format will allow for rapid updates, keeping content current in a fast-evolving field.

Familiarize yourself with UI’s winter weather policy

Winter weather is coming and now is a good time to brush up on the university’s winter weather policy and guidelines. If there is a change to campus operations, the university will issue a Hawk Alert and post updates at emergency.uiowa.edu. Learn how the university makes weather-related decisions, read helpful tips, and get answers to frequently asked questions.

Winners were selected in four categories: Undergraduate student, graduate student, faculty/researcher, and people’s choice.

  • 380 Express bus service extended through 2029: The 380 Express bus service between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City will continue through 2029. The university offers discounted bus passes to faculty, staff, and students. 
  • Have an idea for a Grandparents University course? Grandparents University invites you to propose hands-on courses for its July 2026 event, where kids (ages 8–14) and their grandparents learn together. Submit your proposal by Jan. 9.
