College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

Next Thursday, our clinics and college will be closed as we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. More than anything, this holiday provides us the opportunity to express our appreciation for one another. I am grateful to work at my alma mater -- a place that I love and be surrounded by a caring, talented, hardworking, and intelligent community of faculty, staff, and students. I am grateful for the work we all put toward the mission of the college from educating our students to caring for our patients to researching new breakthroughs in dentistry. I am one of many proud alumni of this college and I appreciate traveling the country to see my fellow alumni at events to support the college. I thank every person who reads this message for giving me the opportunity to be your dean and lead this wonderful college -- It means the world to me. Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

D3s participate in poverty simulation

On Wednesday, third-year dental students participated in the poverty simulation - an interactive exercise that is designed to increase participants' understanding of the challenges faced by individuals and families living in poverty. Through this simulation, students assumed roles that mirror real-life situations, where they face barriers and make difficult decisions that those in poverty often face daily.  After the simulation, students acquired better awareness, more empathy, and be inspired to take action to address the systemic issues contributing to poverty.

Info corner: clinical attire

It is the responsibility of each student, resident, staff, and faculty to maintain proper dress and a well-groomed, professional appearance according to the clinical attire guidelines or those required by your job/requirements. Additionally, scrubs are considered “street clothes” and may be worn in and out of the building, but be aware that the public perception of individuals in scrubs outside of the building is that you are a professional and should behave accordingly. Please refer to policy 2.7 in the Clinic Operations Manual for more information on clinical attire.

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Ma AY, Rysavy O, Cho SH. Effect of different types of tooth and post space lengths on the accuracy of the digital post space with intraoral scanning. J Prosthet Dent. 2024 Nov 18:S0022-3913(24)00699-1. doi: 10.1016/j.prosdent.2024.10.011. Epub ahead of print. PMID: 39562223

This study evaluated the accuracy of two intraoral scanners (IOSs), TRIOS 4 and Primescan, for scanning post spaces in different tooth types (maxillary central incisors, first premolars, and molars) with varying post lengths (10-13 mm). Primescan performed significantly better, achieving high trueness and volume capture up to 13 mm in central incisors and molars but was less accurate for premolars with longer post spaces. TRIOS 4 failed to reliably scan beyond 10 mm. The findings highlight the clinical importance of selecting appropriate IOSs and post lengths for precise and predictable digital workflows in restorative dentistry.
