College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

Over the next couple weeks, many faculty and staff members from the College of Dentistry will be attending the ADEA and AADOCR/CADR Annual Meetings in National Harbor, MD, and New York City, respectively. I am looking forward to attending both meetings and connecting with peers and friends from around the country to discuss how we can further advance dental education and research. Our college will also be receiving two national awards from the AADOCR National Student Research Group for having the largest number of student abstracts at the national meeting and the greatest percentage of new AADOCR student members relative to our enrollment. Thank you to Dr. Teresa Marshall, Dr. Eric Van Otterloo, and Sheila Britton for their work in leading our nationally-recognized Student Research Program. ~Clark Stanford

Collaborative and innovative research

Tandon MC, Warren JJ, Daly JM. Prevalence and Associated Factors of Fluoride Varnish Application. J Am Board Fam Med. 2024 Sep-Oct;37(5):826-832. doi: 10.3122/jabfm.2024.240066R1. PMID: 39978847

This study examines the prevalence and factors associated with fluoride varnish (FV) application in a medical setting at a tertiary care center from 2018 to 2021. FV, a proven preventive treatment for dental caries, was applied at low but increasing rates during well-child exams, rising from 0.1% in 2018 to 1.9% in 2021. The study found that Black, Hispanic, and Medicaid-insured children were more likely to receive FV. Notably, advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs) and physician assistants (PAs) were underused in providing FV, with no applications recorded by these clinicians. The findings highlight the need for increased FV use in medical settings, particularly by midlevel providers, to improve oral health outcomes, especially for at-risk populations. The study also suggests that quality improvement initiatives and provider education could enhance FV application rates, offering a critical opportunity to prevent early childhood caries during routine medical visits.
