UI Stanley Museum of Art receives grant to study its renowned African art collection

The UI Stanley Museum of Art has received a $400,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation to support research on the history of its African art collection. The grant will allow the museum to hire a small team to research, document, and publish the history of ownership of artworks in its permanent collection, beginning with objects from Africa. It also will fund public programming and the creation of two academic courses on African art and museum studies.

Let’s get started: Key facilities project will begin with final approval of new Health Sciences Academic Building

The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, will consider final approval of the proposed new Health Sciences Academic Building when it meets in Iowa City, June 13—14. The new, six-level building would be built south of Slater Residence Hall and west of Grand Avenue Court, adjacent to the Gerdin Athletic Learning Center, and would house three of the university’s most popular and top-ranked programs.

 

Mark your calendars for the Iowa City Pride Festival on June 17

Celebrate LGBTQ+ activism, culture, and the support of LGBTQ+ rights in Iowa City on Saturday, June 17, during the Iowa City Pride Festival from noon to 10 p.m. in downtown Iowa City. The event will feature a parade, entertainment, vendors, and more.

Coleman selected as national fellow to study book-banning practices, LGBTQ+ activism

Josh Coleman, assistant professor of English education in the College of Education, has received a National Academy of Education/Spencer postdoctoral fellowship to research book-banning practices and LGBTQ+ educational activism in the Midwest.

 

Nominate a student or postdoc for the downtown banner campaign

Submit your nominations for an outstanding undergraduate, grad student, or postdoctoral researcher to be part of the 2024 Dare to Discover downtown banner campaign. Since 2016, Dare to Discover has showcased the exceptional research, scholarship, and creative activities of hundreds of UI students and postdocs. Nominations can be submitted until Sept. 12.

UI seeks more flexibility for leasing, selling land at UI Research Park

The University of Iowa is asking the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, to bolster the appeal of the UI Research Park to biotech and medical research firms by allowing more flexible terms for securing land on which they build.

Sign up to volunteer at the Iowa State Fair in August

The university’s Iowa State Fair committee is seeking faculty, staff, and student volunteers to greet the thousands of visitors to the UI’s state fair booth Aug. 10—20 in Des Moines. Shifts include fair admission, a parking pass, and a T-shirt.
