Dean's Message

A new year is underway! It feels strange to say we are one quarter of the way through the century, but here we are in 2025. I hope the holiday season has provided ample opportunity for you to rest and enjoy company with loved ones. Right before the new year, I was able to travel to Nashville and participate in our Health Sciences Alumni Reception with our partners in Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Thank you to the many alumni who came to the reception or just caught me in passing to say hello! We have two more alumni receptions quickly approaching with the first in Denver later this month and then in February for the Chicago Dental Society's Midwinter Meeting. If we're coming to your area and you're available, I encourage you to attend a reception! These are great opportunities to catch up with a community of fellow Hawkeyes. Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Shin represents Iowa at International Pediatric Dentistry Congress in Jordan

Kyungsup Shin, the Ross D. Christensen Family Professor of Orthodontics, was invited to Jordan as a keynote speaker at the International Jordanian Society of Pediatric Dentistry and Special Needs Congress, held at the Dead Sea. Shin delivered a keynote lecture and conducted a one-day workshop on interceptive orthodontic early treatment for pediatric patients in primary or mixed dentitions.

Levy publishes editorial in JAMA Pediatrics on Fluoride and IQ

Dr. Steven Levy, the Wright-Bush-Shreves Endowed Professor of Research published an editorial in JAMA Pediatrics, which raised concerns of the evidence base in a study on associations between fluoride exposure and children’s IQ scores, which was released Monday. The editorial cited the limitations of available data, inclusion and exclusion of criteria, high risk of bias, a lack of transparency, and more, which do not properly illustrate current knowledge on associations of fluoride and neurodevelopment and cognition.

Finding well-being peer support

The University of Iowa is building a culture of peer support. Iowa offers trainings and resources to help you feel more comfortable and confident when someone you know may need help. View the catalog of resources on the well-being at Iowa website.

Info corner: Medical Emergency Protocol

In the event of a medical emergency in the clinics, stay up-to-date on the protocol outlined in the Clinic Operations Manual section 3.8 on what to do if a patient experiences a medical emergency.

New mass email policy to take effect this month

In an effort to reduce the number of emails faculty, staff, and students receive, the Office of the Vice President for External Relations and the Office of Strategic Communication is implementing a campus-wide mass email policy, which focuses on the needs of the audiences who receive the messages rather than the needs of the sender. This policy will not impact mass email communications within the College of Dentistry.
