| Dean's Message
Yesterday was the college's final interview day for prospective dental students. These interviews are critical for the students and our college in that they help us identify the right students to make up our incoming class, who will enhance our community as clinicians, researchers, and future peers. I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the success of our admissions process and interview days, which is seeing a record number of applications once again. Thank you to Jodi Graff, Marie Matson, Dean Timmons, the admissions committee, interviewers, student guides, and alumni, who have gone above and beyond to help us attract the best and brightest dental students in the world! Cheers! ~Clark Stanford | | | Olujitan receives Delta Dental Graduate Student Research Grant Mojisola Olujitan, a graduate student in Azeez Butali’s lab received the Delta Dental Graduate Student Research Grant. Olujutan’s study will explore oral health perceptions, access, and utilization of dental services by international students. Using surveys and focus groups, the research will investigate factors such as oral health knowledge, health insurance literacy, financial limitations, and cultural differences that may hinder access to dental services. The long-term goal is to help international students better navigate healthcare systems and utilize available dental care, ultimately improving their health outcomes. | | College of Dentistry hosts First-Gen celebration On Tuesday Nov. 5, the College of Dentistry held a celebration for National First-Generation College Celebration Week. Alongside beverages and snacks, the event included an opportunity for first-gen students and supporters to share who inspires them and share why they support first-generation students. Thank you to everyone who attended the event and showed support for first-gen students. | | | Join us on Monday for a Veteran's Day CE over lunch Peggy Dickey and Deb Moeller, Community Engagement and Partnerships Coordinators with the Suicide Prevention Team at the Iowa City VA Health Care System will speak to the college on understanding the oral health care needs of veterans and military culture. The better we understand these things, the better will be able to communicate with and provide compassionate care for our veterans who come to us for dental treatment. The CE course takes place in Galagan B from 12-12:50 p.m. and attendees will receive one CE credit. Pizza will be available to the first 60 attendees. | | The Dental Public Health Club invites you to join them at an Iowa Heartlanders Hockey social event on Friday, Nov. 15 for a 7 p.m. puck drop. Paint, fill, and add-on to your heart's desire and flex your creative muscles. You can pick up your ornament from dental administration and all contest submissions are due Friday, Dec. 6. You can submit your ornament back to dental administration. Remember, your ornament must be able to hang from a tree! Voting will take place Dec. 9-13 on the third-floor link. | | Info corner: Name badges There are many areas in the DSB that are off limits to non-students/employees, so always wearing your proper IDs badges shows that we are working in proper areas. It also helps everyone get to know you better. In clinic areas, it helps our patients feel at ease as it’s easier to recognize a member of the college when seeking assistance. | | | Get to know: Teresa Phillips in Oral Surgery Family: I have 4 boys.
