College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to visit College of Dentistry alumni in Phoenix, Arizona, for a delightful reception. Later this evening, I will be in Chicago for another alumni reception at the Chicago Midwinter Meeting. While crossing multiple time zones and traveling hundreds of miles in only a few days may seem exhausting, I am fortunate to have these opportunities to travel around the country, reconnect with old friends, and see familiar faces. I enjoy catching up with our alumni, whether we're reminiscing about stories from the past or I'm sharing updates about the college today. Thank you to our alumni around the country and world who make an effort to keep in touch. It means so much to me to have a strong Hawkeye community. Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Kotsakis GA, Ganesan SM. Microbial Dysbiosis, Titanium Release, and Peri-implantitis. J Dent Res. 2025 Feb 14:220345241307939. doi: 10.1177/00220345241307939. PMID: 39953673.

This study examines how titanium particles released from dental implants contribute to peri-implantitis, a condition that causes inflammation and bone loss around implants. While traditionally linked to bacterial plaque, recent research suggests that titanium degradation triggers immune responses that worsen inflammation and make standard plaque-focused treatments less effective. The study highlights how titanium particles activate immune pathways, leading to persistent tissue damage and bacterial imbalance. It also warns that common cleaning methods may accelerate titanium release, worsening the condition. These findings suggest the need for new treatment strategies targeting both microbial infections and titanium-induced immune reactions, with broader implications for improving implant materials and patient care.
