Standard Time-Block Model in University Classrooms

This message is intended for those academic departmental administrators (ADA), chairs, directors, and DEOs offering courses.

All classes scheduled in University Classrooms (UCRs) must follow the standard time-block model with rare exceptions requiring approval from the departmental DEO and the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education (APUE). Exceptions will be considered on an individual basis and most often for one academic session only within the fall, spring, or summer

Starting with the opening of the fall 2025 planner, the department ADA or DEO must complete the online Non-Standard Class Time Exception Request form instead of emailing Renee Houser.

This form will be reviewed by Registrar Offerings Compliance and, if approved, forwarded to the APUE for final review. Courses scheduled off-cycle without prior approval will be moved to a standard time block.

Important: The scheduling exceptions field has been updated to include two new fields: Scheduling Exception Start and Scheduling Exception End. These fields are part of the edit section information screen in MAUI Offerings Planner. If the Scheduling Exception End field shows an end session, this section WILL NOT automatically replicate for the next “like session” (fall to fall/spring to spring). Consequently, each individual section will need to be manually created with an approved standard class time, or you will need to reapply for a non-standard class time exception using the online workflow form. If no end session shows in the Scheduling Exception End field, the section will replicate in the future as approved by Classroom Scheduling.

Standard Class Times

Standard class times will be strictly adhered to when the course is open for undergraduate enrollment—courses numbered below 5000 (or below 6000 for engineering courses)—within University Classrooms (UCRs)/Level 1 shared classrooms.

Exclusions to the Non-Standard Class Time Approval

  • Departmental locations1
  • Course levels 5000 and above (or course levels 6000 and above for engineering courses) 2
  • Any Screenings (SC)
  • Off-campus or online classes
  • Classes that start on or after 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday
  • Classes that start on or after 5 p.m. on Tuesday or Thursday
  • Weekend classes

1Classes are not subject to standard times when scheduled in a specialized space or a non-UCR classroom (e.g., clinics, laboratories, studios, rehearsals, conference rooms, rotation, etc.).

2All graduate-level and professional course offerings support a specialized student population and are thereby exempted from this policy in UCRs if starting on a standard class time block.
