College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

I have enjoyed seeing the college come together this holiday season whether it was for our winter gathering, ornament contest, or any events hosted within your department. This time of year is important to reflect on what is most important to you and to spend time with those who mean the most to you. 2023 was my first full year back at the College of Dentistry and I'm always reminded that I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. This will be the final Hawkeye Smile of 2023, so I hope you all enjoy the holidays and maybe I’ll see a few of you at our Health Sciences Bowl Game Reception in Orlando, otherwise I’ll see you in the new year! Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Perio gathers at AAP 2023 in Texas

Periodontists from all over the world converged on Austin, Texas, for the 109th American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) annual meeting. As the new department chair, Dr. Siva Prakasam hosted his first friends and alumni reception on November 11th. Attendees included alumni ranging from 1979 to 2019, several leaders in the field, and friends from all over the country.

AAP Foundation President, and proud University of Iowa alumni, Dr. John R. Herrin, had a chance encounter with our new DEO, recognizing the iconic yellow “IOWA” pin on his jacket. This led to the honor of Herrin joining the UI Perio reception.

Faculty and residents were also active in many conference events. Dr. William Burns, a senior resident, represented Iowa at the AAP Foundation Ambassador Breakfast. Dr. Sukirth Ganesan, Graduate Program Director, joined the Journal of Periodontics editorial board, lectured on COVID-19 and the Periodontal Environment, judged the Balint Orban competition, and moderated the Winner’s Circle session. Dr. Carlos Garaicoa, Co-Predoctoral Director, and Ganesan attended their LEAD alumni reunion meeting. Dr. Juhi Uttamani, Assistant Professor, was awarded the Straumann Annual Meeting Scholarship.

The Fall 2023 Dental Link

The Fall 2023 Dental Link will soon be hitting mailboxes. The team did a great job of gathering great stories from the past six months to create an impressive looking publication. This edition's focus is on the new Together Hawkeyes Campaign. The college will be sharing individual stories from the magazine on online as we head into the new year.

Collaborative and Innovative Research

Nguyen TT, Mitchell JM, Kiel MD, Kenny CP, Li H, Jones KL, Cornell RA, Williams TJ, Nichols JT, Van Otterloo ETFAP2 paralogs regulate midfacial development in part through a conserved ALX genetic pathway. Development. 2023 Dec 8:dev.202095. doi: 10.1242/dev.202095PMID: 38063857.

Drawing from his F31 award and his dissertation research, Tim Nguyen and his research team are investigating the development of the midface region and the underlying pathology of craniofacial anomalies in that region. In this project, the team found that inactivating Tfap2a and Tfap2b in the neural crest causes midfacial cleft and skeletal abnormalities. When these genes are inactivated, numerous gene regulatory networks are dysregulated, notably Alx1/3/4 transcript levels, thereby effecting the morphogenesis, patterning, and differentiation in the midface region. The team found this effect in more than one vertebrate species.
