Iowa Ranks Highly in Key Metrics for Dental Colleges

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics is a national leader in NIDCR research funding, dental education research, and the amount of patient care experiences that dental students receive.

Developing a Comprehensive Understanding the Oral Microbiome and Its Impact on Overall Health

Sukirth Ganesan and his team are using a multi -omics approach to study the relationship between periodontal disease and metabolic syndrome. The National Institutes of Health awarded them a R03 grant for over $300,000 for this project. The project will determine the precise relationship between these conditions, which could help prevent disease or provide early indicators of disease and possible avenues for treatment at an early stage of the condition.

The AADOCR Was a Great Success

On Tuesday, February 15, the 69th Annual Iowa Section of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial was held. The meeting was a great success with Pete Damiano, Bernstein Professor of Dentistry at the University of Iowa and the director of the Public Policy Center, providing the keynote address on the role of academic research in public policy. Leo Marchini, associate professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry at the University of Iowa, was the featured speaker presenting on how the pandemic affected research and scholarship. The awards for presentations will be announced in the DSB Weekly next Friday.

American Academy of Cariology (AAC) Student Research Award

Pre-doctoral students (DDS/DMD candidates) and Master’s students (2 or 3 year programs) who wish to undertake novel Cariology research are invited to apply for the new Student Research Award sponsored by the American Academy of Cariology (AAC). The application opened on February 9, 2022, and closes on April 15, 2022. More details are available on the American Academy of Cariology website.

Iowa Dental Foundation

IDF Accepting Scholarship Applications

The Iowa Dental Foundation (IDF) is currently accepting scholarship applications. All dental (D3s), dental hygiene, dental assistant, and dental lab technician students are encouraged to apply. Dental students may receive up to $5,000 and all other dental professional students up to $750. The total number of scholarships awarded and amounts vary each year. For more information or to see past awardees, visit the IDF webpage. Completed applications must be submitted by May 1, 2022.  

Olivia Knox

The College of Dentistry Welcomes Olivia Knox

Olivia Knox is joining the College of Dentistry as a new Support Services Specialist in the Oral Surgery Clinic. She recently graduated from the University of Iowa in December of 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in English and Creative Writing. Olivia is from the Quad Cities in Eastern Iowa and recently moved to Iowa City full-time. She has two Persian cats, Louie and Henry, and is an avid animal lover. She also enjoys creating art, reading, watching Hulu and Netflix, and spending time with her friends and family. Olivia is very excited to be joining the College of Dentistry team!
