Iowa researchers creating new approach to protect tissue during radiation therapy

While radiation therapy is effective against tumors, it can also damage healthy cells. A new study — which is co-authored by James Byrne, UI assistant professor of radiation oncology and Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center member — looks at how tardigrade Dsup protein can protect healthy cells while allowing effective treatment.

UI Health Care North Liberty campus set to open April 28

The University of Iowa Health Care medical campus in North Liberty will open on Monday, April 28. The campus — the first newly constructed hospital facility away from UI Health Care's university campus — will be the home for the UI Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, which includes UI Sports Medicine, and also will include an emergency department and 24-hour drive-thru pharmacy.

U.S. Department of State halts International Writing Program funding

The U.S. Department of State notified the University of Iowa International Writing program on Feb. 26 that its grants through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs will be terminated. Due to this loss of federal funding, the program's leaders will cancel its summer youth program, dissolve distance learning courses, and discontinue the Emerging Voices Mentorship Program. The number of fall 2025 residencies also will be reduced by half.

Tracking federal updates: Judge issues nationwide injunction blocking NIH rate cut
