UI sees record student retention, graduation numbers

Thanks to numerous strategic investments and campuswide partnerships, a record number of UI students are staying enrolled and graduating on time. In fall 2024, more than 90% of first-year students returned for their second year, and the six-year graduation rate for students who started in fall 2018 is 74.6% — both of which are a new high.

Tracking federal updates: UI continues to monitor changes, advocate

UI’s investments in faculty retention efforts paying off 

After the University of Iowa made faculty success an important pillar of its 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, the effects are showing. The UI’s initiatives on supporting faculty success are helping retain more instructors, researchers, and clinicians, with faculty resignations decreasing by 11% in 2024.

UI seeks permission to advance 4 facilities projects

The University of Iowa is seeking permission from the Iowa Board of Regents at its February meeting to proceed with four facilities projects. They include a new UI Health Care child care center, which would replace the current Westlawn location, and approvals for the new Arena Parking Ramp, Iowa Memorial Union renovations, and renovations to the first floor of Mayflower Residence Hall.

Application period open in Graduate College dean search

The co-chairs of a committee tasked with selecting the next UI associate provost for graduate and professional education and dean of the Graduate College are seeking internal applications for the position, for which all tenured full professors at Iowa are eligible to apply. In addition, nine faculty, staff, and students have been named to the search committee.

Updates proposed to the UI 2022-2027 Strategic Plan

The UI has submitted a revised 2022-2027 Strategic Plan for consideration at the Iowa Board of Regents meeting next week. The midcycle update aligns the plan with the recently amended Board of Regents Strategic Plan and ensures compliance with new state laws, as well as allows the university to assess progress, refine strategies, and set new goals for the coming years.

Renowned neuroscientist, son make strides at Iowa

While Ted Abel has been part of impressive progress as the founding director of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute at the UI, one of the best things to happen to him has been personal — seeing his son, Seamus, who is on the autism spectrum, prepare to graduate this spring. Seamus has thrived at Iowa, while his father has broadened his research focus to include neurodevelopmental disorders.

  • Recognize teaching assistants: The Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award recognizes up to 30 teaching assistants for their work at the university. Nominations are due by Wednesday, Feb. 26, and awardees will be celebrated in April.
  • Blood drive takes place today: The UI DeGowin Blood Center is hosting a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the UI Health Care university campus’ fountain lobby (elevator C, level 1). Stop by and donate if you are able.
  • New group coaching series helps you build a foundation of well-being: The Back to Basics group coaching series from liveWELL is underway with free virtual coaching programs on physical activity, nutrition, mental well-being, and sleep. Sign up now.
