College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics

Dean's Message

The work that we do makes a difference. One part of that, which we do not highlight enough, is how important our dental hygienists, dental assistants, office staff, maintenance teams, business office, and other support staff are to making our ship run. The impact that we have on oral health across the State of Iowa is due in large part to the support, conscientiousness, and dedication that each of you have to ensuring the we meet the needs of each and every patient that comes in our door. The work that you do is vitally important for us to accomplish our mission and vision. Thank you for your on-going efforts to use your time, gifts, and talents to make us what we are. It matters! Cheers! ~Clark Stanford

Daily Iowan: "The ingredients in toothpaste and what they mean"

When going to the grocery store to get more toothpaste, it can be quite challenging to understand what each ingredient is and does. Second-year dental student Abhigna Akurathi wrote an informative article for the Daily Iowan on how to choose the best toothpaste.

IMOM

Sign up today to participate in IMOM

The Iowa Mission of Mercy will be in Des Moines this year on November 4-5. Typically, the College of Dentistry provides a huge amount of support to the event on the Saturday, which will be Nov. 5. This year’s Mission of Mercy will be held on the Iowa State Fairgrounds in the Varied Industries Building (3000 E. Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA  50317). The clinics take place from 6:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. with all dental care provided for free to those who come and are willing to wait. Services provided to the patients include cleanings, restorations, minor oral surgery, endodontic and periodontal care as well as removable prosthodontics (e.g., “flippers”).

This event is a major public health event for our state, and it is a great opportunity for our students to grow and learn as clinicians while connecting with dentists from all over the State of Iowa. Faculty participation is vital so that students are properly supervised, and it is also important to have dental assistants, hygienists, sterilization staff, dental lab techs, and other support staff.

Please join the College of Dentistry as we seek to help other Iowans. You won't regret this rewarding experience!

Anyone interested in volunteering will need to register on the Iowa Dental Association’s IMOM site.

Collaborative and innovative research

Zhang J, Wang AX, Wu Y, Zhang S. IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) suppresses a hyper-IL-17 response-mediated bone loss in a murine experimental periodontitis. Arch Oral Biol. 2022 Sep 27;144:105555. doi: 10.1016/j.archoralbio.2022.105555. PMID: 36191445.

Recent studies have shown that dysregulated IL-17, a cytokine that plays a prominent role in the development of several inflammatory diseases, can be treated by an anti-IL-17 neutralizing antibody. The research team for this study designed an experiment, which showed that this neutralizing antibody can effectively mitigate inflammation in periodontitis and reduce alveolar bone loss.

Hawkeye trailblazers: Tracing Iowa's LGBTQ+ activism

Earlier this year, members of the newly formed Hawkeye Pride Alumni Network reflected on the early days of LGBTQ+ activism in Iowa City. A discussion of this rich history, along with challenges that continued, was led by former UI Archivist David McCartney and Aiden Bettine, the former community and student life archivist at UI Libraries Special Collections and executive director of the LGBTQ Iowa Archives and Library. A recent program traces the history of the pride movement at the University of Iowa.
